What was your favorite book that you read in high school? What about middle school? If you are lucky, one or two books stand out in your mind as memorable. Many of my students are struggling readers, which means they read two to three grade levels below their actual grade. This makes the act of reading extremely difficult; understanding and remembering what they read is even more taxing. The main way to improve reading ability is through reading! Reading is a skill, just like playing a sport or an instrument; the more you practice, the better you get. However, because reading is so challenging for my kids, they are reluctant to do it at all. I want my students to see that reading can be enjoyable and memorable. I want to provide my students with time every day for independent reading, and I need novels that deal with topics and issues that my students are interested in so they can choose what they read.
