Hut, Hut, Hike! Football Books for Our Library
Funded Nov 14, 2017We received our football books and got them processed for the library and on the shelves just in time for the NFL playoff season. Everything could not have gone more perfectly! The students are so happy to finally have some books about football with up-to-date statistics and current players.
These books are serving a real purpose in our school by providing students with the opportunity to find high-interest, self-selected books for their independent reading time so that they do read and do improve their reading abilities outside of class time.
In one of the photos submitted you will see three boys all looking together at one of the books we received. When I snapped the photo and told them it was to thank the donors, one of them said excitedly, "These books are really fun!" That was music to my ears.”

Funded Jan 24, 2017We would like you to know that the new books you provided for our library are a hit! They are all checked out and students are asking when they will be returned so they can get their hands on them next. Stephen Krashen, a well-respected professor of education at USC, has written repeatedly that research shows the best way to truly improve reading ability is not through direct instruction but rather by providing access to high-interest texts students can self-select. Knowing this, these books are exactly what we need.
In particular, our large English Learner population is really enjoying having the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. While the reading level is a little high for them, the inclusion of images in these texts makes the stories engaging and more accessible. If I even consider suggesting these students look at a different book, they vehemently shake their heads no while clutching the book, fearful that I will take it away from them--which I would never do!
The I Survived books are heavily sought after by the sixth graders. What makes these books such a success in the library is that you can read them in any order and the students come back wanting to read another in the series. Students who normally take a month to read a less engaging book are, as a result, reading a book a week.
We are in the process of planning a comprehensive outside reading program at our school and such a program would not even be possible without the addition of these high-interest materials to our library. We are very appreciative to have these books for our students.”

Good Afternoon. Today In The News...!
Funded Jan 31, 2012Thank you so much for the donation of the video camera to our classroom. Since we received the camera it has been in constant use as my journalism students practiced filming techniques then finally worked to produce a complete 10 minute news show. In addition the camera was used by the Film Production class for projects, by the English 10 classes to film their Othello performances and by the Advisory classes to record excellent examples of digital portfolio presentations. The camera has helped us to document remarkable events at our school this year that will be shared with students this year and in the years to come. Thank you again for your support.”

Funded Mar 14, 2012Thank you so much for providing my class with a video camera. We used it constantly as students learned and practiced filming techniques and then finally produced their first ever news show. They learned to tell a story through a new medium, and quite frankly learned that that is not as easy as they might have thought. They had to problem-solve constantly as they ran into challenges along the way. But what better learning experience could they have had? And it was all made possible with the donation of the camera. Thank you again for your support.”

The Greatest Villain?
Funded Mar 13, 2012We cannot thank you enough for the donation of the Othello books and support materials. The students loved the text and many of them were very proud to have finally read a Shakespeare play. As you can see from the pictures, they really experienced Shakespeare by acting out scenes from the play and planning their own scenes. We practiced and practiced until the language became understandable to them. And we even got to rehearse sword fights at the beach on our tenth grade field trip.
Thank you so much for the books.”

Extra! Extra!! Read All About It
Funded Jan 30, 2012My students and I cannot thank you enough for the donation of the tabloid size color printer. It is getting used constantly. Primarily we are using it in Journalism to print full sized pages of our school news to be posted around campus every month. But the printer has gotten much more use than that. The English 10 students have printed covers to hero books and will be printing comic books soon as part of a joint project with their history teacher. Plus, students throughout the school stop by to print color copies for everything from their science fair project to their foreign language project to their statistics reports.
Students are taking pride in producing professional looking work. Thank you so much for helping us buy this printer. With the budget crisis the way it is, we never could have afforded it.”

Ms. Schlatter
