My students are all exceptional individuals in between 11 and 15 years old. The majority of my students are nonverbal and use sign and communication devices to help them communicate their needs. We practice and use a lot of repetition to learn basic concepts. They need assistance to complete most tasks, but are proud of what they can do with some help. Reading is challenging for all my students as we try to meet their reading goals. My students enjoy having stories read to them, and love opportunities to spend time in a relaxing library environment enjoying books or using the iPad. I have learned that our learning environment makes a difference in opening up student learning. We need to be comfortable while learning, yet focused. When my students basic needs are taken care of, they learn more effectively. We are included in special classes such as art, music, gym, theater and library in a large urban school district.
