Our school is located in a middle class suburban area of California, but a majority of the students live in the surrounding low-income areas. We have one of the most diverse student populations racially, ethnically, economically, and linguistically. The students I work with are energetic, creative, wonderful sixth grade children - many of whom come from homes filled with stress and anxiety about loss of work, illness, hunger, and fear. Most of these students are required to deal with these problems along with their learning disabilities. Many are English language learners. The drastic budget cuts have affected what I am able to do for them on my own, as well as what the school is able to provide for them.
