Romiette and Julio is a modern version of the play "Romeo and Juliet". During second semester, 9th graders are expected to read the Shakespearean play and from past experience I have learned that it can be difficult for students to understand the plot, theme and other literary devices of the play due to the language and other learning obstacles. Upon taking my students to the library to test their grade reading levels and acquire their Lexile scores, I learned that the average reading level for my 9th grade students are 4th-5th grade with a few exceptions of some reading at grade 7. Some of them have already shown some desire to become better readers and I want to encourage them to read novels that they can relate to and that motivates them to read more. The novel requested has a Lexile level of 610L and the reading grade level is 4.7. Considering the average reading level of my classes I believe that the students will be able to understand "Romeo and Juliet" better if they also read "Romiette and Julio". I have some activities/lessons that correlate with the Common Core Standards (see attachments) that I plan to use and will locate more upon confirming purchase of the novels.
