When was the last time you sat in a meeting or at a conference, in straight back chairs, no room to move, warm because of number of bodies packed in the room, listening to someone speak to you? Now, how long were you able to sit there before taking out your phone, doodling, getting up to stand in the back of the room, or wishing you weren't there? Would you feel different if you had flexible seating? Students are asked to do this day in and day out, listening to their teacher attempt to teach them something new. Teachers try and make it engaging, interesting, accessible, but many times, especially in a special education program, reaching the students consistently is a struggle. Flexible seating would change how we are able to reach our students. A wobble chair, seat cushion a bean bag, these would be similar to doodling or taking out a phone while in a meeting. The couches and panel dividers would have a similar effect as someone who gets up to stand in the back of the room. The items I am asking for help with purchasing would help me meet some of individual needs of my students. It would allow my students the opportunity to comfortably be in a room, day in and day out, listen to me, their teacher, teach them as a whole class, small group and individually. These things would allow me to more effectively put my students in small group and pairs to partner read, create projects, write stories or have a quiet place if they need one. People, overall, learn best when they are comfortable and when things like learning disabilities, autism, and ADHD are involved, comfortable spaces significantly increase the likelihood that information being taught, will be retained.
