Most of my students have no access to a computer at home. Their only opportunity to work with one is at school using one for 30 minutes twice a week in our computer lab. They are always left hungry for more time to work with their interactive and engaging programs. It breaks my heart to see their sad faces heading back to class and having to wait until the next time around. Unfortunately, our school is unable to provide us with one due to deep budget cuts. My students come from low socioeconomic families struggling to make enough money to cover their basic needs of food and shelter. Others are unemployed. I can only imagine how much more their enthusiasm and learning would grow in reading, math, and all the content areas if they had more updated technology available in the classroom.
