Super Scientist
Funded Mar 9, 2016Thank you for the science kits. We will be able to incorporate them into our existing curriculum. When you add hands-on equipment to your lessons it reinforces what the kids have learned.
Think back to your own elementary science lessons. Do you remember learning about electricity? Think about how much more you would have remembered if you were able to put electrical circuits together to power something. One of the kits you helped us acquire has circuits the students can put together, reroute, and put together again. They are able to experiment with the concept they learned in their lesson.
The second kit gives the students the opportunity to grow plants. This is a lesson a student can learn in school and reuse in their home. The primary goal of an educator is to create lifelong learners and if a student becomes a gardener for life we have attained this goal.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to provide our students with hands-on science materials. You have not only helped us enable our students better understand their lessons, but also given us the possibility to create some lifelong learners.”

Funded Jan 1, 2016Thank you for funding our project. This has given our students a way to use their creative energy. Currently we have over twenty-four students who participate in our Crochet Club daily. Some students are financially able to bring their materials, yarn and looms, on their own, but others are dependent on the school. We have been able to purchase some items or received some donations from the community, but with the overwhelming participation we cannot keep up with the demand.
Your donations have allowed us provide materials for the students who would otherwise not be able to participate. Our students are grateful for the time the teachers are taking to teach them this skill and grateful for the materials you have provided.
Some students have started researching and watching how-to videos on their own to learn how to crochet new items. As an educator, my primary goal is to create lifelong learners. With the excitement of crocheting it is initiating students to become this type of learner. They are finding ways to learn beyond their teacher and school building.
Your money has not only helped create cute crochet projects, but also helped to create lifelong learners. Lexington Elementary School appreciates you and the educational opportunities you have made available.”

Balls: A Playground is Where They Need to Be
Funded Jan 12, 2015Thank you for purchasing balls for our playground. We received a delivery on Monday and had them available for kids on Tuesday. I was busy on Tuesday and was not able to take pictures of the kids playing until Wednesday. They balls were all dirty. It sounds silly, but I was excited because I knew they were being played with. The students were excited and using the balls for various games.
The balls that were on the playground were old and the ones that hadn't already been thrown away needed replaced. They were heavily worn and some didn't hold air. When the new ones arrived the students were thrilled. The last few days have been unseasonably warm and it has given our students a chance to play with all the new balls.
As a counselor I understand the importance of play. The balls have given our students a chance to play team sports on the playground. They learn rules, cooperation, and team sprit. When determining life success it is just as important to know how to work well with others, as it is to know your academics.
Thank you again for your generosity, and giving us the ability to bring team sports and play to our students.”

Inventive Play With Play-Doh
Funded Dec 24, 2014Thank you for the generous donation of Play-Doh and Play-Doh tools! Our preschool classroom was the first to use the new materials. All of the students were engaged and using their creative and critical thinking while creating Play-Doh creatures and other objects. They used the tools to manipulate the dough into various objects.
In the classroom the teacher was able to incorporate other preschool skills. The teacher incorporated color recognition with the various colors of Play-Doh. One of the tools in set of tools was scissors. The students were able to practice using scissors on the dough without the risk of cutting themselves. One of the tools pushed out various shapes. The teacher was able to incorporate shape recognition with this tool.
When the students were finished with the lesson they asked if they could play with the Play-Doh again the next day. The favorite tool among the students was the scissors. With the excitement of the students and teacher I think the Play-Doh lesson was a success. Thank you for purchasing the new materials for our school. Preschool was the first to use them, but will certainly not be the only ones. I cannot wait to see the many creative ways the teachers are able to incorporate Play-Doh in the classroom!”

I Plead for an IPad
Funded Dec 28, 2012Thank you for purchasing a tablet for our students. There are thousands of apps that we are going to be able to download for student use. In the mornings we have center time and I am able to provide the apps for the struggling students. They are able to review the skills that have already been taught, but that they have not been able to master.
In the morning when the students are working on independent reading non-readers are able to use the tablets with digital book apps that read to them.
In tight school budgets its not always easy to provide my students with all the materials that they need. Thank you for helping me provide some tablets to my students and enabling me to enhance their education.”

Nurture the Nature Trail with UPS
Funded May 2, 2012I am so excited to use all the weather tools and nature cam with my students. We have already installed all the weather materials and we have plans to install the nature cam soon. We are going to link the nature cam to our schools webpage and allow the students to observe what is happening in our garden at all times. Many times we are required to teach from book, but are unable to use cool materials like the ones we received in this grant. With these tools we are able to tech with hands-on materials. The students remember experiences much better than just lectures. Thank you for giving our students the opportunity to have more experiences. ”

Funded Jan 18, 2012Thank you for funding our bulling in schools project. We currently have reading groups where we are able to read and discuss literature. I wrote this grant to purchase group books over bullying. We have read two of these books in our literature groups. We had discussion after reading the books and the kids were so angry with the bullies in the story. This was an excellent opportunity for me to talk with the students about the impact of their behavior on other students. We rarely have extreme bullying like was displayed in the story, but we do have students picking on each other. We talked about how picking sometimes turns into bullying and how harsh words or actions make you or another student feel rotten. With the examples that were given in the story and our discussions I think my second grade students have a much better understanding of bullying and its impact. Thank you for showing your devotion to students by funding projects like this! ”

Funded Jan 18, 2012Thank you for funding our Tag Reading Systems. The students in my class who have been nonreaders were able to read for the first time on their own. They read the first two books and were asking for more. I am so impressed with the independence these systems were able to bring to my struggling students.
I have already started writing a new grant for more books. With the reading systems and new books I am expecting my students reading skills and test scores to improve.
Thank you for funding this project and others. I appreciate people like you providing these tools to classrooms like mine. ”

Funded Mar 22, 2011Thank you for our new recycling materials. We started using the recycling bins and dry erase boards immediately.
The students enjoy using the hand responders for instant teacher feedback. They use them during literature groups, math groups, and classroom games. Those students that are not willing to raise their hands and give an answer love using their boards. They are able to answer without all of the attention, or worry that their answer may be incorrect.
The students have also become avid recyclers. They love using the new classroom bins to dispose of their old papers. I even have students who will police the trash cans and make sure papers that could be recycled are put into the recycling bins.
I used the recycling ball to educate the students on the importance of recycling. They were able to recognize the different materials that can be recycled as well as the importance of recycling to our natural resources.
On Earth Day we invited a guest speaker to discuss recycling and the environment. The speaker was impressed by what we already knew and were doing in our classroom. Thank you for helping us purchase recycling materials and become expert recyclers. ”

Funded Nov 11, 2010Thank you for our new fossil collection. The students were able to get the fossils out and examine them in class today. We used magnifying glasses and studied all of the fossils. They were most impressed with the dinosaur bones. They were amazed when they studied the Tyrannosaurs Rex tooth. We compared the tooth of a meat eater and plant eater. The students then thought they noticed green on the plant eater's tooth and blood on the meat eater's tooth. We had to take our lesson in a different direction and learn about how long ago the dinosaurs roamed the earth.
I love using the hand-on material and enabling the students to understand more complex concepts they would not otherwise be able to comprehend. One of the dinosaur fossils was a replica of a brain. The students were amazed at the small size of the brain. It also stated that this was one of the smartest dinosaurs. They were amazed that their own brain was so much larger.
Thank you again for making such a wonderful project possible for my students. Please keep donating and making our job as educators easier and more interesting. ”
