Real-World Stories, Real Student Engagement
Funded Aug 15, 2024My students are really enjoying learning about science and social studies concepts through Scholastic News Magazine and Science Spin Magazine, and I am so grateful to you for your generosity!
My second-graders are learning about the world with real-world stories. They are reading interesting articles, using their critical thinking skills, and developing their language arts skills as well. The students really like the colorful pictures and think the topics are really cool. I think they love watching the videos most of all!
Thank you so much for helping me bring my project to life. Thanks to you, my students have a truly amazing resource!”

Funded Feb 13, 2024Thank you for your generous donations to help my project idea become a reality.
My students have been so excited to use the new iPad and color ink in the classroom, especially as we've been working on an extensive informational unit involving biographies of important people who have made a difference, an exploration of natural resources, and the diversity of life in various habitats.
Students used the iPad to watch informational videos in small groups, which led to in-depth learning and great discussions about that learning. It also came in handy to quickly research facts on various topics.
What a difference color ink makes! I saw students more motivated to write their informational pieces because they were so excited to have color pictures to include in their reports. They actually could not wait for their selected pictures to come out of the printer so that they could add them to their writing! So exciting!”

Calming Area
Funded Jan 5, 2023"Where are you going to put it?" "Is it ready?" "When can we start using it?"
My students were so excited to see the calming area develop. We had been talking about needing a dedicated space in the classroom where they could go to deal with difficult emotions-a place that felt calm and safe, a place where they could have a few moments to themselves, a place where they could breathe.
Initially, all students were given the opportunity to "try out" the calm area in the classroom. It was important for all of them to experience the calm area for two reasons: to remove the temptation of it being a novelty and to reassure them that it was a safe space that was open to all without creating a stigma. Each student sat for a few minutes in the calm area and read books about emotions or used the tools like the breathing board. Now, when a student feels they need to "take a break" or deal with a strong emotion, they go to our comforting and safe calm area.
Because of you, the generous donors. my students now have a safe space in the classroom to process their feelings. Your donations have greatly impacted the social emotional well-being of my students, and we are so very grateful. Thank you!”

Funded Dec 30, 2014It's hard to express in words the looks on my students' faces when I showed them the Time for Kids Magazines. They couldn't wait to get their hands on them! They were so excited because they love science, learning about the world, and reading. They very much enjoyed reading about Chinese New Year, volcanoes, snow, and inventions. They learned so much from these magazines. They said to me things like: "Look. There's a snow bar graph and we learned about graphs in math.", "Did you know that there were so many volcanoes all over the world?" and "I've never seen anything like these [inventions]."
Then when I used the color printer to print out pictures of themselves, as well as other resources, they were in awe. They thought it was so cool because, as one child said, "Things look better in color." Of course they asked me to print all sorts of things because most of them don't have easy access to a color printer.
With common core standards, there is a push to use more informational text in the classroom. What better way than through the fun, interactive, informational, and beautifully colorful Time for Kids Magazines! The kids are really motivated to read these magazines, and the additional activities that come with the various articles are completely correlated to the common core standards.
Having the printer has also impacted the children's learning in a very positive way. Not only is it a timesaver for me to have a printer in the classroom, it allows the children to access resources that they might need for projects.
I am so thankful to the Donors Choose team, and especially to Ivan Houston and Bich Ngoc. Your generosity is sincerely appreciated.”
