Funded Jan 5, 2023The materials you provided for my class are being used daily. I use the calming strategies from "Breath Like a Bear" at different points in the day as a brain break and to help students destress, refocus, and remember they are valued members of the classroom. A specifically fun and funny moment was when I read aloud one of the activities from a section titled "Heart Garden: Plant Seeds of Happiness" that asked students to think of something that makes them smile such as a butterfly, rainbow, or watermelon. They were to repeat the word to themselves, and as students were doing this, many of them were smiling, and soon many were laughing and enjoying themselves because they were thinking of silly things like caterpillars and Minecraft. Soon the whole class was laughing out loud and having a really great time! And to think, it was sparked by such a simple mindful activity!
Most of the materials purchased were for the students to use on their own in a designated "Calming Area" which became the side corner of the classroom. When the students saw the new center, they were all wide-eyed and curious. After I explained how they are invited to visit this area any time their emotions are high or they just need a space away from the group to calm down, they were all so excited and so very thankful, and I could tell they felt validated and heard.
The next steps for my students is to feel free to talk more openly with each other about their feelings and to also learn how to listen to others respectfully and lovingly. I am excited for the rest of the year, to watch my students not only grow academically, but to become mindful of theirs and others' emotions and feelings!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Woo
