Bullying is a wide spread problem in schools across the nation. Students who experience bullying often live with the effects for the rest of their lives. Bullying can take a toll on a student's emotional and physical well being. One way I teach my students to deal with bullying, is though martial arts training.
Being a part of the Taekwondo Martial Arts Team, gives students the self confidence to stand up against bullies, and the self discipline to protect oneself in a threatening situation without instigating conflicts. Martial arts is a tool for learning respect, integrity, and for boosting self-esteem. In order to participate in martial arts, the right equipment is needed. Uniforms are essential to the sport of Taekwondo.
Caring for their uniform, belt, and equipment teaches discipline and promotes team spirit. There are rules for wearing, cleaning and maintaining the uniform, which is called a dobok. There are rules for tying the belt and requirements that must be met to earn different color rank belts. The dobok itself motivates students to be responsible and respectful. Furthermore, the dobok is needed in the practice of Taekwondo. Techniques used in Taekwondo require the ability to move without restriction. The loose fitting dobok allows students to be fully flexible and perform the techniques used in the sport. Self defense moves often require grabbing or tugging on clothing. The dobok is well constructed to withstand the practicing of these moves, which might otherwise damage a student's own clothing. Our team has doubled in size this year, and about half of the students don't have a uniform for practice. We are also in need of a few more kicking targets, so students can do more kicks and punches without having to wait a long time for their turn at the target.
