  • Learning Code in Class

    Funded Feb 4, 2019

Technology is essential in the modern world. Students at our school start out with a huge disadvantage because technology is not something our students have access to in their daily lives. Very few of our students have technology at home, so it makes it quite important for them to be able to have access to it in school. The generous donations given us through donors choose is allowing our students to have access to technology.

We have used this technology to access programs that introduce and teach our students to code. There is one program in particular that we have used in class, CS First which is a step by step instructional how of code, put together by Google. Students are learning about art and how to animate famous portraits. We also have a lesson where students are able to learn how music videos are created using code.

One of my students, which I will leave nameless, has had lots of social issues this year. He has had issues with staying focused and controlling his anger. Over the past few months he has really become engrossed with coding. He works with a determined look. He has found a way to express himself. He has become a great help to other students with being able to trouble shoot any issues they encounter.

I am indebted to donors choose once again, for helping enrich the lives of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Quintero

  • STEM Activities

    Funded Jul 27, 2018

I would like to thank each one of you for your generous donation to our class. My students were so excited to use the IPad Pro with the keyboard case and Apple Pencil. The students in my class have used the technology to access many computer apps. We have used it in Math. We play learning games like Math Playground and ST Math. These websites are a place where students can use and reinforce their mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills. In language arts students are using programs, like Imagine Learning and Core5, that are helping them bridge the gap with their reading deficits.

My students were most excited to learn about coding. One of the programs we are using is a program in which the characters are based on a familiar Mexican sit-com, Chapulin Colorado. There is another program, Kodable, that the students are equally excited about in class. Students are engaged in conversations where they are excited to share how many games they have created.

Using technology on a daily basis in our class has made technology an everyday tool. Students are understanding that computers are not just for games but it can also be used as a tool to help them enhance their education.

Very few of my students have access to technology outside of the classroom. Having access in the class is allowing them to improve the skills they need to work within the larger world. I can't begin to express how grateful we are for your donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Quintero

  • Cultural Diversity Through Art

    Funded Apr 15, 2013

Thank you so much for the generous donations you gave to our class. Thanks to you our class was able to conduct research and create powerpoint presentations on the MacBook Air. In students' research of India and Japan they learned historical and cultural information. Their culminating activities, both the powerpoint presentations and their art projects, were engaging. Students worked cooperatively to create well researched presentations. They had fun creating beautiful India Peacocks, a bird native to India as well as Japanese Uchiwa Fans.

The students were excited to learn about India and Japan on their new MacBook Air. Students were amazed to learn about the Taj Mahal. They were in awe of its beauty, while at the same time shocked that it was also a burial plot. This was just one highlight of a vast assortment of information and knowledge the students were able to gather.

Thanks to you, my students were able to learn how to conduct research. As they get older these skills will become truly invaluable. We can't thank you enough for all your help.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Quintero

  • Interactive Learning

    Funded Jan 30, 2012

On behalf of my students I would like to thank all of you who helped fund our project. In a typical classroom, most of the day is spent working with scripted programs. There seems to be an almost regimental feel to our students' day. When teachers have other resources at their disposal they can help to further engage students interest in the academic career.

The ASUS tablet has given my students the opportunity to work with engaging, interactive programs on the internet. Students are excited to work with programs as Jeopardy Interactive which helped to test their subject knowledge in language arts, mathematics and science. This program helped to prepare students for their California Standards Test. Each day during recess and lunch breaks students gave up their play time in order to use this program on the tablet. There were other programs that helped to benefit my English Language Learners.

Donors Choose and your generous donations have helped to increase the engagement of the students in our class. My students appreciate your help and your generosity.

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Quintero

  • Planetary Presentations

    Funded Jan 23, 2012

I would like to thank each of you once again for having taken the time to donate to our class. The students in our class have enjoyed working with our new ASUS tablet. The tablets have allowed our students to enhance their educational experience in ways that have been both exciting and engaging.

Each year our students create presentations about the solar system. Typically, they draw pictures and write essays. With the tablets they were able to create PowerPoint presentations about the Solar System. Initially, the students were able to use the tablets to explore the Internet and find information about the solar system. Later, they were able to learn more from videos, like Bill Nye. These videos gave them an increased understanding in an engaging format. Finally, the students were able to culminate their unit on the Solar System by creating PowerPoint presentations.

Education is never more meaningful then when you are engaged. The benefit of having the ASUS tablet was incredible. Students were excited to learn and share what they learned. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Quintero

Our school is an inner city school in a major urban area. Students are in a high risk area. However, in the classroom is where the playing field can be leveled. Students, with the donations given, can be given a chance to afford the same opportunities as other students in more affluent neighborhoods and homes. A tablet will help the students be able to access various stimulating videos and resources available to them in the world of science.
