As part of a larger, thematic unit on differences, beliefs, and societal actions, students will learn about and gain an understanding of various groups throughout history -- with the use of novels as primary reading materials (supplemented, of course). Special focus will be on handicapped people (Wonder), Asian-Americans (Farewell to Manzanar), African-Americans (One Crazy Summer), Muslims (Persepolis), and Jews (Maus I&II). Recent PEW surveys show that two-thirds of millennials and those younger do not know anything at all about the Holocaust -- I want to change that. Through the use of an easy-to-read, but serious content, graphic novel focusing on Nazis and the Jews during WWII, I want to broaden the awareness of my students in an accessible way for them. Graphic novels have recently tackled serous subjects, and I think this is an ideal vehicle to attract students who don't normally find reading invigorating and worthwhile. Through the use of "comics," I want "to trick them into learning" and spark an appreciation and interest in reading.
