Bakers and Books
Funded May 12, 2012I did not think that the opportunity to use our new learning tool would arise before the end of the year. However, we were able to get in four different baking sessions - two recipes - before the year let out. It was great!
After demonstrating a complete recipe for my students, two groups went back on their own and baked cakes. Listening in on what they were saying, specifically about how to measure correctly and having to use fraction conversions, was just what I was hoping to hear! "How can we put 3/4 cup milk if we only have a 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, and 1/3 cup?" "Let's fill the 1/4 cup three times because 1/4 plus 1/4 plus 1/4 makes 3/4."
So many people, students and adults alike, struggle with the concept of fractions. Having a hands on and visual understanding of what these numbers mean helps to create and solidify a foundation for my students. And, they get something delicious to enjoy at the making of their own hands!
Thank you for your generosity.
Sincerely,
Mr. O
P.S. Baking with the mixer also did two more things. One, students were more motivated to earn an opportunity to bake and, two, each child that baked made two mini-loaf sized cakes, one to enjoy and one to give away to someone important or impactful in their life. ”
With gratitude,
Mr. O'Neil
