Incorporating Toni Morrison's book, Song of Solomon, into my 12th grade English classes will allow me to build a theme around the importance of heritage. With this novel, my students will experience a rich story that explores a character's search to discover to his African roots and reflects the need for real human connection, allowing for important classroom conversations about celebrating and embracing our diverse backgrounds. Our class explores literature from all over the world, from India to Nigeria to Afghanistan, and beyond. The course is anchored in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's belief that all stories are important and that there is a "danger of the single story." This essential theme is developed through exposure not only to diverse authors, but also through a purposeful building of community within the classroom. I hope with the exposure to varying authors from various backgrounds that my students grow to appreciate the uniqueness of each person they meet but also find the common humanity among all of us.
