My students attend a school in LAUSD from a low socioeconomic area. Most have parents who only speak Spanish to them at home. Their exposure to English literature is very limited. Nonetheless, they are eager learners and have the ability and knowledge to become creative writers. They enjoy writing in their journals and sharing their work. During Independent Work Time, the writing center is the most preferred center because it allows them to express their thought, create their own stories, and write letters.
