  • Calling All Butterflies and Bees!

    Funded Jan 16, 2022

My students were so excited to get our new planter beds and dirt. They all wanted to help assemble them and place them in our garden area. We have just planted our first bulb flowers in one of the beds and sunflowers in the second one.

After about 2 weeks, we saw our first sign of growth. The sunflower seeds had started to sprout, then the bulbs sprouted about a week later. My students were so excited to see the first phase of plant life.

We are excited to see the little plants turn into beautiful flowers and start attracting our pollinators.”

  • Thriving, Binding and Blending

    Funded Oct 30, 2015

Words cannot express my gratitude for approving a donation to my classroom. Many of my students do not have access to current technology at home or the support needed to truly learn from the applications in a fun and rewarding environment. I have a classroom of 8 children and they ask daily about using technology. The IPad and accessories you donated inspires the children because we can load applications useful for learning the alphabet and numbers to matching or simply learning to brush their teeth. The bright colors and imaginative sounds of the IPad keep the students engaged. So often the students will want to try an activity independently. The IPad offers that challenge to them as an alternative to a hand over hand project. It is important to have creative ways to reach the students as they each are capable of learning at different levels. The wireless speaker donated has also been amazing. We are able to play music right from the IPad and all the children can hear it clearly. Each year we do a Spring Fling singing show at our school. This speaker allows us to take our IPad anywhere to practice our classroom song. We can practice in the classroom or even go outside for a change of pace. These items together have offered us the opportunity to reach the children through creative outlets.

The binding machine and accessories is another item which is such a blessing. Each year we take many pictures from the beginning of the school year to the end. We place these precious pictures into a scrapbook as a keepsake for the student at the end of the year. We start with a first day of school picture all the way through our end of year Baker Games competition. We fill in with holidays, music and movement, Project ride (therapeutic horseback riding), etc. These moments in a child's life our precious. Our scrapbooks will preserve these memories for a lifetime. The binding machine allows us to make a book for each student. The bindings allow the books to lie nice and flat so the children may use fine motor skill to place pictures, stickers, and glitter decorations. These books are fun for the children and they enjoy looking through them to remember all the fun activities we did during the school year. We especially love to share these with parents and/or guardians since they are not present during the school day. It is important for family to know all the wonderful things their children do each day. Our binding machine also allows us to create educational Picture Icon Communication (PIC) books for our students. These books allow us to create a communication system with all students, but especially with those that are non-verbal. We create a sentence with words and have pictures that replace words in the sentence. For instance, we may have a sentence that says, " I would like a _______ today?" The blank could be filled in with the picture of a cookie or a sandwich. The PIC system helps the children to make choices through picture identification. We use a PIC system daily in my class.

Thanks to Chevron I am able to create a dynamic learning experience for my students. Since all my students learn at different levels the IPad and binding machine has allowed me to customize a lesson plan for each student's needs, yet they are all still using the same equipment, devices, or books. This way each child feels like they are part of the same learning experience. Thanks for making my student's dreams come true.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cohn

  • Creative Learning

    Funded Oct 15, 2013

Thank you for your generous donation. My students were so excited when they saw the new instruments that you had purchased for them. It is their favorite time of day. They are practicing their active listening skills and following directions with the instruments. They are beating on the drums when told to do so. They tap the rhythm sticks high above their head and really low by their toes when asked to do so. There are endless possibilities of what can be taught with the items you have purchased for my classroom. I can't begin to tell you how much we appreciate this wonderful gift you have given to these students. The arts supplies have also been a wonderful addition to our class. The students are working on basic cutting skills and eye hand coordination skills with gluing the paper projects together. It also allows my students to take pride in their wonderful master pieces that they are now able to share with their parents.”

  • Learning with Manipulatives

    Funded Jun 28, 2012

    Dear Stephen and Melinda,

I can't thank you enough for your generous donation. My students use the hands on manipulatives several times throughout the school day. Since most of my students need assistance and one on one attention completing their school work, the manipulatives allow the other students to work independently on hand eye coordination as well as problem solving.

The storytelling kits have been so exciting for my students as well. My students will sit quietly and listen to the story and wait for their turn to put the character on the storytelling board. Also, it promotes good behavior because each student wants their turn. Your donations were appreciated more than you know, especially with all of the district budget cuts.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cohn

My students are kindergartner and first graders who are severely intellectually challenged. Even though learning is harder for my students they are still able to reach their full potential with the right strategies and techniques. Learning with manipulative's keeps the students engaged and helps them to focus for longer periods of time. The manipulates help them grasp the concept that they are trying to learn, they can hear it, feel it and see it.
