Nonfiction to Boost Reading
Funded Dec 20, 2021Your donation has allowed my students to have access to books connected to their magnet theme and interests. Free reading in my classroom consists of students reading chapter books and informational text. The most popular books have been those connected to topics they are studying in their history class. Some have also chosen to read books that represent who they are and/or connected to a struggle specific groups dealt with. It has given them a different perspective of what they learn about in their history class.”

Literacy Success For All
Funded Sep 23, 2021Since we have had our monthly delivery of Scholastic Action my students have worked on summarizing, digging deeper into the text to answer text dependent questions and inferencing. They have been able to practice these skills and more with the high interest this magazine provides. We even discussed taking a trip to Italy one day to eat Casu martzu! Students are engaged and look forward to reading with partners to discuss interesting points as pairs and as a whole class. They can't wait to see what other topics will be explored in next months magazine.”

Funded May 5, 2020Thank you so much for your donation. The novels we received have been a great addition to our classroom library. My students are on their way to be 1,000,000 word readers, because of your gracious gift.
We are very excited to read and learn about what it takes to be resilient. Thanks to you were able to deepen our understanding of the growth mind set and discuss what it is to have grit. We can't wait to get started on our literature circles and engage in critical thinking activities to reinforce the literary elements we are currently focusing on.”

Funded Jul 9, 2020Thank you for your generous contribution to our class. My classroom received culturally diverse novels that will broaden my student's perspective of social justice. By donating these novels my students are being encouraged to read more and learn about other's like them. They are very excited to get reading, since they will be reading books that they wouldn't necessarily be exposed too. As they dive into these books our class discussion will revolve around resiliency, social justice and connect to our ongoing study of utopia and heroism.”

Funded Nov 4, 2019Thank you for giving us the widescreen projector that was needed so much. It has been an instrumental in giving my students' access to our daily lessons. Being that our class is not set up with the newest technology, it was difficult for many of the students to see the lessons being modeled. Our old projector had to be placed in the center of the room, so that the projected material could be large enough to see from any seat in the class. This was difficult to do on a daily basis as the projector cart would have to be moved back and forth every period to avoid a hazard.
Now there is no need for that. With the wide screen projector, every seat in the classroom is the best seat. The kids are excited to see assignments and directions on the entire wall. They are looking forward to watching The Tell Tale Heart and clips for our hero's journey unit. They can't wait to create their presentations and show the class what they have produced. Not once have I heard any student say, "I can't see" or ask if they can move closer. The class is running smoother with less interruptions. Thank you once again.”

Bookcases for Classroom Library
Funded Oct 21, 2019We love our new bookcases! They have been essential in promoting literacy in my classroom. Students are able to access reading books from every area of the classroom, since we now have book cases in the front, back and side of the classroom. When the book cases arrived they were so excited. They couldn't wait to put our library books on them. Kids are able to switch out their books, so much easier. Having access to our class library all around the classroom has created an atmosphere of choice, as they are able to choose books from various bookcases.”

Increasing Critical Reading Skills Through an Engaging Novel
Funded May 28, 2019The Boy in the Striped Pajamas was the perfect book to introduce viewpoint in our holocaust unit. We are looking beyond dates and facts in our study of this time period. We are using excerpts from other texts to understand what life was during this time The Boy in the Striped Pajamas helped us see the innocence of children when it comes to adult issues.
Many of my students were intrigued by the book. As soon as I brought out the books for our literature circles, all students wanted to read it. We had to find the most effective way of ensuring the group selections were fair.
Most of my students have seen the movie and were looking forward to the details that can only be found in the actual text. They also wanted to find out how much different the text was from the movie. Although they knew the ending, they were still moved by it.”

MacBook Air for Increasd ELD Success!
Funded Dec 12, 2018Our class was so excited to open our Mac Book Air! We received it two weeks after winter break so it added to the excitement of the new semester. The excitement my students showed once I showed them all the features and activities we can do on the Mac Book Air was unexpected.
We have decided to use the Mac Book Air to do research for their science projects and create health presentations. The Mac Book Air will greatly assist in building cross- curricular projects that I am excited about implementing. We have also used it to improve our reading comprehension skills and increase the chances of passing the reading inventory test my students need to pass to reclassify.
We are in awe at all the great things we can do with a Mac Book Air and look forward to using it this year. We appreciate your kindness and THANK YOU very much.”

White Board Easels For Presentations
Funded Dec 11, 2018My students are really enjoying the whiteboards. They enjoy working together and feeling in charge of their academics. Recently my students worked on presenting various reading strategies. They were responsible for paraphrasing a reading strategy and creating a symbol for the strategy. They then shared their paraphrase and symbol with the group. Along with sharing their paraphrase and symbol they had to teach their classmates how to use the strategies.
The students were really excited to see that the whiteboards had arrived. They had been waiting for them eagerly. They wanted to jump in and start working as a group. They wanted to set them up right away, which we did. They worked together very well and showed the importance of teamwork when getting things done.
As my students continue to work together to share their learning, they will help each other understand course material. Eventually the easel boards will be used as part of the multiple reads we do in our class. As we read for multiple purposes students will document their findings on the boards. They will also be used when we develop leveled questions to deepen their understanding of the text. Lastly, we will use the easel boards for various grammar, writing, and literary stations.”

Funded Jan 24, 2012Thank you for your generosity. As you may or may not know public schools are facing major cut backs, which affects many of the supplies we use in the classroom as well as other things. Your donation allowed us to include more technology within our classroom. Without your help my students this year would not have had the opportunity to have technology in their hands. The Samsung Galaxy tablet you help fund brought eagerness and motivation to the classroom.
My students were able to record their oral presentation for assessment. This was a great deal, since many of my students are shy and did not want to present in front of the class. We used the tablet for research and other fun activities. It also provide many of my students who are new to technology an opportunity to explore technology on their own.
