  • Calming Area

    Funded Jan 4, 2023

This has been a very rewarding and exciting year for my students. It has also been one in which we are still feeling the effects of the pandemic, social unrest, and natural and man-made disasters. We are grateful to have received two iPads to use in our calming corner to use when emotions become overwhelming.

We use the iPads to access calming activities and learn strategies that can be used to regulate emotions. When a student is emotionally dysregulated, they are not learning and may be disrupting the learning of classmates as well. Being able to spend a few minutes on a calming activity may be enough to help the student regain the focus needed to join in classroom activities.

We all experience anxiety and stress in our lives. Learning to cope is important to sustain happiness and fulfillment in life. Thank you for your support in this important endeavor!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lords

  • Creating Kindergarten Authors

    Funded Mar 9, 2012

Thank you for your generosity in funding my "Creating Kindergarten Authors" project. The materials you supplied for my kindergarten classroom were enthusiastically received by all my students. The materials are fantastic and created so much excitement during writing workshop!

My kindergarten authors wrote stories about their experiences, friends, and families. They used writing to express their feelings and chronicle their dreams. They wrote, and wrote, and asked to write some more.

Once a week they chose favorite pieces to publish. During the publishing process, students edited their writing and then created beautiful front covers to enhance their work. They shared their work with classmates, school personnel, and parents.

Through writing workshop my students learned critical thinking, planning, and design skills. They learned another very important lesson, too. They learned that there were kind and generous people who support their writing work.

Thank you for helping me to impart these important lessons!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lords

This classroom project was brought to life by an anonymous donor and 6 other donors.
My 24 kindergarten students come from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school is a public school in an urban neighborhood. Most of my students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Some of my students are from military families. Many of my students are from single parent families. Some of my students are/have been homeless. Our neighborhood has parks, libraries, and other community resources. It also has gangs, poverty, and drugs. My students need to find success in school to overcome the obstacles.
