Spread the News!
Funded Sep 7, 2013Thank you for the Scholastic News and Science Spin magazines! My students are excited to see the new issues each week. They usually say, "Cool!" or "Yes!" when they see that they will be reading a Scholastic News or Science Spin magazine during reading group. I get excited for my students to read the magazines, because I know they will be reading high quality nonfiction texts that include all kinds of text features. The magazines are engaging for readers of all levels within my room.
The pictures that are included within this thank you package, show my students working on a text feature identification project. They were using one of the Science Spin issues to identify specific text features, such as picture captions, close-ups, photographs, and headings. It was fun to hear them analyze the photographs and talk among themselves about whether or not it would qualify as a close-up and why.
This week we will be reading an article called, "Say Cheese, Chicks!" It is about penguin cams! Scholastic does a great job of choosing stories that activate students' imaginations and get them wondering about the world. Scholastic also aligns their lesson plans with Common Core standards which has helped me guide my students to think critically about key details and compare and contrast information all while they read complex texts appropriate for their level.
Thank you so much for the donation to our classroom! We really appreciate your support.”

Good Fit Books Needed!
Funded Oct 4, 2012Thank you for funding the project "Good Fit Books Needed!" We were so excited to receive the box of new books. The kids helped me unpack the box, and they showed a lot of excitement about the contents. Everyone was talking about which books they wanted to read first.
I have used some of the books for a series of mini lessons on fiction story elements. We have also been using the books for fluency practice. The students enjoy reading the Dr. Seuss books during Partner Reading.
Next week I have more lessons planned using some of the books to teach character traits and themes in stories.
Thank you so much for your contribution to our class. We LOVE books!”

Funded Apr 13, 2012Thank you for the nonfiction books, historical fiction books, and the books on CD for our listening library. When we received the box of books from AJK Books, Inc. my students were thrilled! They couldn't wait to explore the contents of the box. One by one the treasure of books was revealed. Many students were asking me, "May I read this one?" To which I answered, "YES! Enjoy, and let me know what you learn!" They eagerly returned to me to tell me exactly what it was that they gained from the contents of the book.
The books we received are engaging; filled with vivid photographs and other text features that students can sink their teeth into. They are able to easily navigate the books to find what they are searching for and they can learn from the pictures and the text.
As a whole class we have used the books to study Earth Day and ways to take care of the Earth. We have also used the books to learn more about Simple Machines during our last unit of study.
Thank you, again, for enriching the lives of my students by donating to the project, "Read to Learn." Your donation was put to good use and it will continue to touch the lives of many students for years to come.
