    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Students are preparing for their final performance acting out Orpheus and Eurydice in our Greek Amphitheater. These 4th/5th grade students have been in Socratic Seminar analyzing the myth, using textual analysis on their peers' different ending to the myth, and improvising dramatic tableaux for their book talks on multicultural myths.

Our 8th graders mentored the 4th/5th graders on climate change, creating a Powtoon and then explaining the thesis, analysis, and supporting evidence on their academic article.

Our 10th graders have created websites for National History Day on the Berlin Wall, The Armenian Genocide, The Crimean War and Women's Rights.

These students have learned how to nerd it out!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Enszer

  • AP Literature Seeks Tantalizing Texts for Literary Merit

    Funded Jan 17, 2012

Thank you so much for providing the tools needed for success on the AP Literature Exam. Students were able to learn literary terms, take practice exams, and hone their study strategies not only for the exam, but to prepare for college.

Students in the AP literature class attended tutoring after school, bringing their Kaplan guides to study key terminology such as scansion (iamb, trochee, anapest, dactyl) and annotation strategies on model student essays. Groups formed where students quizzed each other using flash cards on Biblical allusions, prosody, and figures of speech. Competition fueled questions between Pape and Angel such as “Who was Odysseus?”

Budget cuts have hit California schools hard, laying off teachers, leaving students grappling for supplies, and harboring large amounts of stress in the system. The students and I are so appreciative for the gift of these tools. Passing the AP Exam means college credit, which equals hundreds of dollars saved to that student. Literature shares the human experience, allowing us to understand each other.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Enszer

One of my students works at Chick-fil-A in South Los Angeles. When I asked her what she spends her money on, she told me how she sends it to El Salvador, where she is from; to support the students she mentors. Her dream is to become a doctor, go back to El Salvador, and give back to the community she spent her first seven years. Over winter break, students read The Stranger by Albert Camus. They came back excited to discuss ideas of existentialism. One student commented that it was interesting to be in the head of someone who didn't believe there was anything else outside of this life. Students also created videos with the text of an AP poem prompt. One student who wants to pursue a degree in Film and Cinema created a powerful video including images of the Titanic with the text of the poem "The Convergence of the Twain."
