Trying to teach human body systems in 5th and 6th grades using a textbook or through video is not as effective as a life-size touchable model. Giving students access to a life-size skeleton will help them understand how the skeletal system is constructed. Human body systems are a focus in 5th and 6th grades and hands-on exploration is encouraged in my science classes. What better way to learn about bones, joints, and ligaments than a full-size skeleton that they can handle and explore? A skeleton will be used to teach both health and science lessons and students will be able to relate the hands-on investigation where we dissect chicken bones and examine the marrow and discuss blood cell creation and types to how blood is made in the human skeleton.
