  • Learning to Reduce Waste: Recycling

    Funded Apr 23, 2014

The books and materials have arrived and your wonderful donation is making a world of difference to my students. The Scholastic News/Science Spin magazines have been a tremendous resource. My students are now reading and learning about contemporary issues and science. Every time the magazines arrive, students see them on my desk and beg (yes, beg!) to read them. This is amazing because most of my students do not have any magazines in their homes and frankly did not miss them. That has all changed. Now, they cherish the ones we are getting and they take them home to share with their families.

I teach in a school that is high poverty, over 60% are economically disadvantaged. I have a number of students who are homeless but thanks to your support, ALL my students are learning about things they can do to help recycle, reduce and reuse. They are learning that even little things can help the earth.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Tennyson

  • Blue: Learning About Water and the Environment with Disney

    Funded Mar 28, 2014

Thank you so very much for your very generous donation to support my project, "Blue". My students and I are going to enjoy them tremendously. I just received the materials recently and we watched the first video in "The Blue Planet". My students were totally awestruck. They can't wait for the next episode. I have also made the books available for them and I am hearing wonderful comments like: "Hey, look at this", and "I can't believe that all this is in the oceans".

The sad part of all of this is that we live next to water and have access to a lot of what we have seen in the books and videos. The problem is that my students never get to experience them. However, with your generous donation, I could bring the oceans and sea life to the classroom.

Thank you again for your very generous support of my project.”

  • Reading and Researching the History of Conflict

    Funded Dec 16, 2013

I would like to send a huge thank you for your wonderful support of my project. My school has a newly adopted Social Studies Curriculum, and in the grade level that I teach, we are studying 20th Century Conflicts. Our library didn't have many resources for students in this area. So, your generous gift gave us the ability to have a very nice classroom library on those topics.

My students and I were just recently looking through all the materials that we were able to purchase and it was wonderful to hear the comments that they were making. I just had to put my own book down and sit back and enjoy their excitement.

We will soon be studying 20th Century Conflicts and the books that you helped me purchase will be an incredible resource for my students. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your very generous donation.”

    With gratitude,

  • Learning About Environmental Changes with Disney

    Funded Nov 5, 2013

Thank you so very much for supporting my project, "Learning about Environmental Changes with Disney". Although I live in and teach in a northern community, my students have been very excited about making and studying snow.

It has been said that the Northern Eskimo (Inupiat and Inuit) have over 100 words for snow. We have been able to produce different kinds of snow from ice. My students are beginning to realize why the Northern Eskimo (Inupiat and Inuit) have so many words for snow.

This project has already helped and will help me to extend our study of snow and ice to the entire school year. We don't have to wait until there is snow on the ground. We can make snow and study the many aspects of water. And, when we have finished our study, we enjoy a tasty treat.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Tennyson

  • Breaking The Bullies With Robotics For Girls

    Funded Mar 28, 2013

I cannot say thank you enough for your very generous donation to my Donor's Chose project for an Asus Tablet. I work in a school that has about half of the students at or below the poverty level. Through your generous donations, I will be able to use my Asus Tablet in a number of ways. First of all, I started a Robotics team this year and struggled with the technology that I had to program our robot. With this, I am able to help students write programs and transfer those programs to the robot very smoothly. Secondly, in my classroom, I can also use the Asus Tablet to get audio books and have students look up thing on the Internet right at their desks.

So far, this Tablet has opened up a whole new world for my students and I have you to thank. I have had this tablet for about a month and have used it and had my students using it countless times. Thank you for being a part of that experience.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Tennyson

  • Defining an Environment That is Bully Free

    Funded Feb 3, 2012

Thanks to your generous contribution to my project my class is finally able to learn about words and their meanings. Having a classroom set of dictionaries is helping my sixth grade students in many different ways. My students are able to learn how to use the dictionaries to look up words, their meanings, their spelling, and their part of speech. All the students in my class have the same dictionary and they can use these dictionaries for all content areas all the time. I encourage my students to use the dictionaries whenever a word comes up that is unfamiliar to them, especially in the area of bullying.

I can't tell you what a wonderful difference these dictionaries have made. You have made my life easier. And you have made a real difference in the lives of my students.

From the bottom of my heard, I thank you all so very, very much.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Tennyson

I teach in a school that is high poverty, 59% are economically disadvantaged. We have a number of students who are homeless. My school also has a high transiency rate. Just in my classroom alone I have had over 50% of my class come and go this year. Many are also here in the United States for the first time and English is not their first language. Our school is very culturally diverse.
