  • Four More Chromebooks, Please!

    Funded Mar 29, 2017

The four HP Chromebooks with the accompanying management licenses have arrived and my sixth graders are using them math practice, research, writing and presentations.

My students just finished an "i-Search" project. They selected a topic of interest to them, used the Chromebooks to research it on the Internet. Then, they prepared a written report and a slide show. Their projects were the best I have ever seen from my kids. They learned a lot—as a matter of fact, so did I.

The Chromebooks arrived in time so my students could work on their typing skills. This year, the kids had to use the computer for their standardized test. I think having access to Chromebooks in our classroom translated into higher scores because my students were more confident when it came time to compose their answers online.

Thank you for donating to this project and helping my students.”

    Mr. Tennyson

  • Sixth Graders Need a Clean Start AKA Hygiene Supplies

    Funded Feb 21, 2017

What a wonderful thing you have done by donating to this project! The soap, tooth brushes, tooth paste and deodorant have arrived.

I waited until all the packages arrived and then my class opened the packages together. They were surprised and delighted by the contents. The looked everything over. Then, I had them make a secret shopper list and put the items that they needed on their list. At the end of the day, while they were at gym class, I put the items in a paper sack and put the bag on their chair. I told them to take the sack home and open it there.

The next day, they hurried into the classroom and smiled at me. During the day, they would come up and say thanks.

So on behalf of my students, thanks. You have made a real difference in the lives of these kids.”

  • My Kids Need Chromebooks to Learn Financial Literacy

    Funded Mar 3, 2017

The two chromebooks have arrived and my sixth graders are embracing the technology. They are learning about GoogleDocs and are using the chromebooks to search for information on the Internet. They look everything from definitions of words to the current temperature outside to the fact of the day.

They are also using the chromebooks to work with our volunteers on a stock market project. They have a spread sheet and are tracking the the performance of their stocks.

Having the chromebooks in our classroom has added a dimension to our work. Student products are richer and show a growth.

Thank for making this resource available to my students.”

  • Dear Google, Bring Us Some Chromebooks

    Funded Feb 28, 2017

The Chromebooks have arrived and students are so thankful. We now have a mini-computer center and kids can either choose to work in the center or take a Chromebook to their work table.

I am so delighted that my students are learning how to use GoogleDocs and they are actually learning how to keyboard. They try to log in at least 15 minutes per day of keyboarding so that their skills will improve and they can show off to our volunteer partners who are helping with our finance project.

Thank you for donating to this project, you have done a wonderful service to my kids.”

  • STEAM-ing Up the Iditarod

    Funded Mar 14, 2017

The wonderful books, the IPEVO document system and fabric has arrived and my kids were so curious and intrigued. They couldn't figure out what the books about dogs had to do with the fabric.

I immediately set up the IPEVO so my students could see the illustrations and photographs in the books. We carefully read and discussed the content. Students took notes during our whole class discussions. I brought in additional information on how many calories dogs consume in a day while running. They divided the number of calories in a Big Mac into that amount and found out the dogs were really chowing down. My students also learned about specific dogs and their genetics—coat type, eye color, etc. They learned so much and now are trying to decide the most important facts! Soon, we will begin designing and making our quilt blocks.

Thank you for making this wonderful STEAM experience possible for my sixth graders. This was the highlight of their year.”

  • Help: Even Sixth Graders Need Recess Clothes

    Funded Feb 14, 2017

As you can see in the pictures, the beautiful, colorful sweatshirts and heavy duty sweat pants have arrived. I am smiling as I write this note because my sixth graders were so delighted and thankful for the clothes.

Before the packages arrived, we talked about the fact that some generous strangers had donated clothes to our class family. You see, we really are family—my students care about each other and are not afraid to show it. I said that I had asked for the clothes because I noticed that some students rarely go outside for recess. I worried that some kids might not have warm clothing and it was nothing to be ashamed about.

When the clothes arrived my kids were so excited--- and they wanted to make sure that everyone got what they needed. I had tears in my eyes.

Thank you for making it possible for my students to have clean, warm clothing.”

  • Quill: Help Us Be Report Ready

    Funded Mar 14, 2017

Once again, thank you so very much for supporting this project. The astrobright paper, toner and cover stock has arrived and my students are delighted top actually being able to do their reports.

My sixth graders have been trying to imagine and research how they will earn a living in the 21st century. They are using the Internet to research potential careers that they think are interesting. They are learning what type of skills they will need and project what their life time earnings will be. This whole project has them speculating about the future of work.

My students have come up some pretty creative "careers" and they have even interviewed people in our community. Right now, students are writing their reports. Soon they will design a mini info poster and present it to the whole class. They will be using the colorful paper and cover stock your donation provided for them to create a beautiful report.

This combination of research, futuristic speculation and art project is helping my students use all their problem solving skills. Thank you for making it all possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Tennyson

  • Beyond Basic: Integrating Art & Environmental Info & State Reports

    Funded Dec 8, 2016

Thank you all for donating and completing the second part of my project to provide my sixth grade students with the books they needed to research and write state reports.

Every year my students pick a state and do an informational poster. Every year they groan and gripe that it is boring. And to tell you the truth, it was. When I first got the idea to do something different, I knew that I would need new materials and I would need the help of wonderful donors like you.

I really wanted to make my students learn about the environment while also making their research more meaningful and purposeful. Right now, they are doing their research using the materials that your donation helped to fund. Soon, they will create their own book including information on all the states.

Once again, thank you for making this experience possible for my students. You are making a real impact on their lives. Your donation has taken them beyond basic into the real world.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Tennyson

  • Expanding Traditional State Reports to Include Environmental Impact Info

    Funded Dec 9, 2016

At the beginning of the year, I was worried about how I would be able to crowd everything into an already overcrowded curriculum. Then, I got the idea of having my sixth graders do expanded reports on the states and thought that I could incorporate landforms and other information into the report. Then I thought about adding environmental concerns into the reports and I knew that I would have a great year and my kids would learn so much.

My problem was finding material at their reading level that contained enough of the information to get them stated. I turned to DonorsChoose because I had absolutely no money for this type of project and I was hopeful that it would happen.

Then you donated and helped my kids. I could not do my job without your help. On behalf of my students, thank you for caring.”

  • Backpacks Make a Real Difference

    Funded Dec 1, 2016

The backpacks have arrived and my sixth graders are delighted with them. We opened the box and I gave each one of my students a beautiful, new, sturdy backpack.

Now they will not have any excuse for losing their homework , important papers, textbooks or library books. Now they will learn to be organized and accountable for their work.

I teach in a school that is high poverty, all of our students are economically disadvantaged and eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Having a backpack is a wonderful thing.

On behalf of my students, thank you so much for your help.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Tennyson

I teach in a school that is high poverty, 59% are economically disadvantaged. We have a number of students who are homeless. My school also has a high transiency rate. Just in my classroom alone I have had over 50% of my class come and go this year. Many are also here in the United States for the first time and English is not their first language. Our school is very culturally diverse.
