Financial Literacy for Sixth Graders
Funded May 17, 2018First of all, i want to say how I really appreciate your help and support on this project. The resources have arrived and my students love using them to learn about financial literacy.
The three Chromebooks have been a game changer. My students have limited access to technology so having these computers in the classroom has helped them become computer literate. They are learning how to do research, cite sources, and keyboard.
My students are researching all about money, earnings and jobs on the internet. They have embarked on a project to imagine and research how they will earn a living in the 21st century. They have researched careers, checked out projected lifetime earnings. Right now they are speculating on the future of work. They have to make a career choice. Next, they will write a report, design a info poster and present it to the class.
Your donation enabled me to create a unit that was a combination of Internet research, futuristic speculation and art. Wow!! This project is helping my students work towards their final goal. It is also helping them test things like financial literacy, develop their problem solving skills, and reasoning. It is sparking some pretty original ideas.
My district is facing tough economic times and our supply budget is severely limited. There was absolutely no money for this type of project. I am so grateful for all you have done for my students! Thank you!!!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Tennyson
Is It Really a Bug's Life?
Funded Mar 27, 2018I want to say two things: first, Ripple, you rock the world! and second, thank you so very much for supporting my kids.
My classroom library does not have any current science materials and because many of my kids do not read at grade level, it is difficult to find appropriate print materials for them. Science gets short shrift in our room and is the forgotten part of our sixth grade curriculum.
I desperately needed a variety of nonfiction books, some engaging DVDs, three Chromebooks and a charging cart to create a quarter-long unit on insects. The kids were so excited when the resources arrived. We started by looking critically at the popular movie, A Bug's Life and other popular animated films; taking notes; comparing/contrasting it to Bill Nye's factual film. Next, we used the Chromebooks to study Alaskan bugs and insects. Finally, my students created an Alaskan Insectopedia about bugs that is amazing.
My kids told me this unit was the high point of their sixth grade and they will never forget it.
Thank you for making sixth grade all that it should be---memorable, fun and worthwhile.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Tennyson

Funded Mar 27, 2018Since we are located near two military bases, many of my sixth grade students are the children of deployed military personnel. They live in an area that is a pocket of poverty and they are handicapped by a lack of resources. They have very limited access to technology and the Internet and as a result, they are falling further behind kids in other more affluent schools.
Your wonderful donation purchased five Samsung Chromebooks that are now helping to change the world for my sixth graders. Three University of Alaska college students came every Wednesday during the school year and helped my students learn about Google Docs and Internet research. I was also able to establish A Dream Big Computer Club so my students could learn about coding and work on class projects (homework) after school.
There are really no words to tell you how much the project(s) you funded mean to my students. Thank you for reaching out to DonorsChoose.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Tennyson

Funded Mar 27, 2018Thanks to your donation and the five Samsung Chromebooks it purchased, I was able to establish A Dream Big Computer Club so my students can learn about coding and work on class projects (homework)after school. Three University of Alaska college students came every Wednesday and helped my students.
I was also able to have my sixth grade students use the Chromebooks in our classroom and Goggle Docs to work on their math/stock market projects and coding.
As I indicated in my project request, today's students need up-to-date computer access inside and outside of school especially for something like the stock market which changes daily.
Thank you for making an immediate positive impact on the lives of my terrific kids. Our school lacks many resources and this severely handicaps my students. By providing these five Chromebooks for our classroom, you have changed all of that.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Tennyson

Funded Jan 5, 2018This letter is an attempt to express my gratitude to all of you for contributing to this project. I am so very thankful for your support and I want you to know that you are making a real difference in the lives of my sixth grade students. This project brought some desperately needed old (pencil sharpeners) and new technology (Chromebooks) to my class.
When the new pencil sharpeners and HP Chromebooks have arrived, my students were so very excited. They were astonished to learn that some kind people had made it possible for them to have access to the Chromebooks and they wanted to know why someone who didn't know them would care about them and would contribute to this project. So we talked about you, we looked your e-notes. The kids were touched by your kindness.
They love having the Chromebooks in our classroom. They are learning about Google Docs, they are researching, and they are learning! You would be delighted to see how they scurry over to get a Chromebook to answer questions and settle disputes about facts.
We have some stumbling blocks in public education. The first one is access to the materials and the second is student apathy. Now, more than ever, teachers have to motivate students to learn. I am happy to say that with your support these twin blimps in the road are not a problem. My kids have computers and they have the interest. Thank you!”

Mr. Tennyson

Funded Jan 26, 2018Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your donations saved our school year!
The toner, pencil sharpener, card stock, dry erase markers, and baggies arrived just in time. My sixth graders were struggling with their reports. We had no toner so they could not print anything. Disaster was looming!
Then the boxes arrived and I slowly opened them. Seriously, you would have thought it was a birthday party. My wonderful kids could not wait to get their hands on the supplies so they could complete their reports.
You see, my kids live in a pocket of poverty. Our neighborhood is changing. Parents are struggling to make ends meet and they have no money for supplies. We look on the floor in the hall for pencils. We are not a Title One school but all my kids are eligible for free breakfast and lunch.
Your support has helped all my kids. They know that people care about them and their education. Thank you.”

Funded Dec 7, 2017I am so thankful that education is a priority for you. My students so enjoyed being able to use these materials to supports our writing/language arts curriculum. In this time of budget cuts and tax shortfalls, it is such a boost to the teachers, students, and parents to have the support of individuals and corporations that truly care for education. My sixth graders live in an area that is a pocket of poverty. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. Our school has no money for supplies and many families are living at or below the poverty line.
The colored paper, toner, binders, markers and labels have arrived and my sixth graders are thankful. They are so happy that they have the supplies they need to complete their writing and research assignments. They love the colored paper and toner because they love printing their assignments. They use the binders and labels to organize their research and the markers are essential for taking interactive notes.
Your donation to this project has helped my students increase and expand their writing and communication skills.”

Funded Dec 15, 2017We all know that reading skills are crucial to academic success. However, when students have the option between reading choosing what they want to read and reading an assigned academic book, the academic book often loses.
But now, thanks to the generosity of donors like you, I am able to give my sixth graders the option of choosing to read relevant books on select topics. Reading has become more of something they want to do rather than something they have to do. The forty-three books you have provided us are helping my students expand their understanding of history and better relate to the problems of 21st century America.
When the boxes arrived, my students were excited to see all the new books—even my non-readers were intrigued. When I told them we were going to use the books to learn about a "hot-topic", they were ready to step up. Every book adds information to our study. There are picture books, fiction and nonfiction works and document sets. There is something that interests every kid in my class. There is something that every kid can read.
We are learning about a real 21st century problem—immigration and my kids are engaging in thoughtful discussions. As they continue on their paths towards college, I thank you for enabling them to expand their horizons through literature and for helping them develop discursive techniques that will serve them well along the way.”

Funded Dec 31, 2017First of all, I want to say thank you. Your generosity has meant so much to my sixth grade students. The books have arrived and now students have access to their own copy of Wild Robot as well as the five other books by Peter Brown.
We have started our author study unit. And my students have expressed their gratitude through independent reading and responding to their reading during discussions and in their journals. They are genuinely engaged in this project. They are reading, discussing and exploring the books, the author, and the themes.
I have been very excited to hear students share the books with their peers and encourage others to read accompanying picture books. This spoke volumes about their appreciation for donation.
Because of your generosity, I am able to further expose my students to current literature that is of interest to them. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for supporting my students.”

Funded Nov 8, 2017Thank you for bringing energy, light and learning to my classroom. The Chromebooks that your donation purchased have arrived and my students love them. They love learning about finance and money.
They are learning how to keyboard, how to use Google docs, and are using the materials at the Schwab MoneyWise site to learn about budgeting. We also work with a group Coast Guard group to learn about the stock market.
Our school lacks many resources and this severely handicaps my students. These Chromebooks are a dream come true for me and my students. They are learning about finance and they are also developing life-long skills. Thank you.”

Mr. Tennyson
