  • All Aboard for Reading Adventures!

    Funded Aug 22, 2024

Thank you so much for contributing to international-themed books for my classroom library. As a Reading Intervention teacher, I am always trying to find new ways to inspire my students to read. Each year, I decorate my classroom with a fun, exciting theme. This year's theme is "Reading Takes You to Exciting Places." The whole classroom is decorated with a travel and adventure theme.

Many of my students are immigrants, representing more than 15 home countries. The students are so excited to have books about their home countries. It makes them feel welcomed and gives them things to talk about with their friends. We created a world map that pinpoints where our new books come from.

Thank you again for supporting our students. Today a reader, tomorrow a leader!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. SAPPER

  • Our Fever Books Have Died!

    Funded Feb 20, 2020

Our class recieved the shipment of books in March of 2020. We were so excited and immediately began our novel study of "Fever 1763" by Laurie Halse Anderson. This historical fiction novel tells the story of a brave and resourceful girl who survives the Yellow Fever epidemic in Philadelphia in 1763. We were just a few chapters in when we shut down the schools for the COVID19 pandemic.

This book was so relevant to what we were experiencing in our own lives. The students were able to identify with the main character, compare their experiences with her, and draw strength and inspiration from her bravery, tenacity and fortitude. What a gift in a difficult time. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. SAPPER

Fifth grade is a year of learning about United States history and improving our reading and writing skills. One way we do that at our school is through an extended study of the historical fiction novel Fever, 1793, by Laurie Halse Anderson. The author uses primary sources and historical facts woven into the story to create a riveting picture of life in Colonial America. Our Fever 1793 books have been loved to death! We need a new class set so we can continue learning from this amazing resource. We also would love more books from the same author for our students who are inspired to keep reading!
