My students recently read the novel, "My Teacher is An Alien," by Bruce Coville while we studied non-fictional text related to alien abductions and the mysteries of aliens. This action filled novel kept my students on the edge of their seats from start to finish and while they were ecstatic to find out how the story ended they were anxious to read the other novels within the series. Having this series of novels will enable them to have access to novels that would not only further their love of reading, but it will also allow each student to follow along in the text as I model appropriate reading strategies when decoding new information. Because English is a second language for some of my students it is so important that they are visually able to see the words as they are read to them and it also allows me the opportunity to model proper intonation and pace as I read. It is my belief that if the love for reading is established at an early age, especially in males, than they can carry that love of reading and acquiring new information and transfer it to other areas of their lives.
