  • Japanese Fish Prints Without Real Fish!

    Funded Sep 7, 2022

I am even more grateful than you can imagine. I ordered, thinking I was still a pre-k art teacher. The project would be a messy challenge. I got back to school and discovered I had been made a pre-k through 7th grade art teachers with only my existing pre-k supplies! My new room doesn't even have enough big kid sized chairs for some of the very tall 7th graders! They will come...eventually. In the meantime doing fish prints will engage many of the older students.”

    Ms. Jacobus

  • Fat Crayons Needed for Little Fingers

    Funded Dec 14, 2021

Thank you so much for your donation to fund crayons for my pre-k students. Not only are we working with broken crayons from the last time we had in-person learning but I have a number of students who need take-home art care packages. Several are experiencing family problems and a little art therapy can't hurt.

We will soon be doing Vincent vanGogh, Georgia O'Keeffe and Jacob Lawrence projects. All will use crayons. Our Romare Bearden version of "The Block" required crayons to draw the city street and water colors to paint over the drawing. Students learned about the wax resist technique. We will be using the dame technique when we draw and paint "The Octopus' Garden".”

  • WInslow Homer and Alma Thomas Will Have Competition!

    Funded Apr 12, 2021

I am so happy that you have funded my request to watercolor sets for my pre-k art students. My school now has some students attending 4 days a week and everyone at home learning virtually on Wednesdays. All students draw and now, paint on Wednesdays. I am so happy that I can now teach them the magic of mixing colors and accidental art of blowing colors of paint on paper to make blended colors and shapes. We will be painting the ocean with sharks and making monsters with wiggly eyes added. The famous Branch Brook Park cherry trees in Newark will be lovely with watercolor clouds of pink.”

  • Multicultural Students Need Crayons to Match Their Lovely Faces

    Funded Mar 22, 2021

The crayons arrived and have ben given to the children. I know I wanted them to match their lovely completions when we drew self portraits but the arrived in time for "sand study" and camels in Egypt! They learned the term "monochromatic" and used at least two colors on the camel, another for pyramids and and a fourth for sand.

Several children drew the rare and possibility extinct 3-hump camel. I think the Pharaohs rode them. I'll check with my students. I will attach photos.

Again, I am so grateful for your generosity. Soon we will be drawing our families.

Oh dear, I cannot upload photos. I am sorry. Take my word for it...3-hump camels are delightful. The entire family can ride to school on them. Yes, I did extol the benefits of owning a camel and riding one to school. They were not convinced.”

  • In Pre-K Artists Read and Readers Paint!

    Funded Sep 23, 2019

You generously donated books to my art students. I had just broke my wrist when they came and I had to have an extended medical leave. However when I got back I read some to the children and put others in the Reading baskets. After students finish art they sit on the rug and read. I want them to have a "no-pressure' fun experience with books.

One day I praised a boy's art and said "Now go to the book basket and find a book to read." He replied "But Ms. Jacobus, I can't read yet." I explained that no one in his class could read yet so just lookout the pictures and make up a story in your mind. He found one of your books and read it the next week too.”

  • Future Romare Beardens and Frida Kahlos Need Crayons!

    Funded Feb 12, 2021

Somehow Donors Choose got the beeswax crayons cheaper than expected and there was enough money left over to order Multicultural crayons for 3 of my classes. This is great because my kids come in fall shades and now they can match their skin colors. The colors are also perfect when we draw lions on the Serengeti Plain!

The beeswax crayons will make wonderful seahorses, coral reefs and fish on black paper. First we will be drawing Romare Bearden cityscapes. Vibrant dragons and Kandinsky concentric circles are in the students' future.

I will be delivering some of the beeswax crayons and multicultural crayons tomorrow and the rest on Monday. No snow storms expected!

Unfortunately the site won't let me upload photos. I have a few of last year's projects.

Oh dear, the site insists that I thank donorS, not just you.

    Thank you again.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Jacobus

My Pre-K inner city artists are as enthusiastic about books as they are about paint and glitter. Most of my students do not have books at home so these books open up a new world of wonder. Often a student will excitedly show me a picture and point out that relates to the current project or art that is on the wall. They will find an animal we have drawn, talk about the different colors of fruit Cezanne has painted or find primary colors in an illustration. I want children to read for pleasure. It is a painless way to build vocabulary, increase understanding and expand their world. A child who reads for fun will do better in every subject in school...even those pesky word problems in math.
