  • Sharing and Learning

    Funded Feb 18, 2021

Your gift has allowed me to get the most engagement as possible during these challenging times. My students have loved using the features on pear deck to participate and interact with each other. We've been looking for ways to connect this year, and this is a dream!

My students can draw pictures, make serious responses for a grade, take polls and discuss. It's changed how we interact. Instead of me talking to myself in the dark (it's been a. year.) I've been having students talk back- sometimes even out loud after they've answered a poll or to clarify!

In addition, the TPT money has allowed me to supplement my curriculum for classes that I haven't taught in a while. I've bought an online scavenger hunt for The Crucible and a fun station activity for The Great Gatsby pre-reading!

Thank you again, for all your support this year! It's been tough, but we're going to get through it!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. W.

  • Thinking Critically About the World

    Funded Aug 20, 2019

Thank you again so much for your support! This gave (and will continue to give) my students a great opportunity to choose (within parameters) a book that interests them, and think about it within the context of the wider world. The titles really connected with students, and I've even had students in other classes ask to borrow books that sound interesting to them! Students don't get the opportunity to read high-quality nonfiction texts in school- they read a lot of shorter primary sources in history classes, literature in English classes, and think "nonfiction" means textbooks. This gives them the experience of interacting with engaging nonfiction-- for possibly the first time!

In my class, we have a lot of reading at home, and a lot of full class discussions, but this also gave them the opportunity to have smaller, closer interactions with their peers. Because they can't hide as easily in a group of 3-5, it forces them to really engage with their peers (or not be able to participate). This has been an exciting project and I'm looking forward to expanding it and improving it in the future! Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. W.

I teach several sections of an AP English Language and Composition class which focuses on the analysis of rhetoric and the power of argument. However, the books available at school for the 11th grade are primarily American Literature, which I have to supplement with photocopies of non-fiction texts. By giving my students the opportunity to read high-quality non-fiction books of their choice in small groups with their peers, they will have the chance to interact authentically with the text. Not only will my students be able to read a good book, but they also will be asked to challenge what they're reading- what is the author doing that is leading them to think or feel certain ways? Why is the author sharing this information? What rhetorical tools are being used? Do their peers feel the same way? While critically reading non-fiction texts with their peers at least 2-3 times throughout the year, it is my hope that my students will have a more well-rounded experience than by depending solely on shorter texts.
