Not A Box!
Funded Dec 21, 2023Thank you very much for your generous support with this project, "Not A Box". My students were thrilled to use the materials to be creative with technology . They helped me unbox the materials and were immediately interested in knowing more about what we were going to do with these items.
We read "Not A Box" and discussed how we can be creative using every day items. As we learned to use the hummingbird bit to program a device that responds to sensors, I modeled different ways I could attach this device to a box with other craft materials and create a robot. So far, we have created "Crazy Characters" and a "Tailgating Assistant" with the materials.
When we learn about volume next year, students are excited to create an animated "Volume Zoo" by creating animals with the boxes and using the Hummingbird bit to make them move. Of course, they will also learn to calculate the volume of the animals but I think the motivator for them will be to attach the sensors and servo motors to make their animal move. Funded Nov 8, 2023Thank you so much for the craft coding materials. These materials have brought our units in computer science to life.
For computer science education week, students were taught about Binary Code. For our craft project, students took one letter in the alphabet (most chose their initial) coded it into binary coded, and used the beads to represent their code. The beads were threaded onto a pipe cleaner to create a bracelet (some chose to make it a choker style necklace.)
During our computer science unit, students learned to create an artistic program. One craft project they engaged in during this unit was to create "Pixel Art". Using the Perlman beads, students created a picture or image, understanding that each bead represents 1 pixel in an image. Since we engaged in this project during the holiday seasons, the students decorated our tree in the hallway with "Pixel Art" ornaments.
My students were absolute thrilled to do all of these projects. We have made "Craft Coding" a mainstay center in the technology lab and they look forward to using the center as a choice time activity. Thank you so much”

Funded Mar 27, 2018The Wonder Workshop Dash and Dot robots have transformed learning computer science for my students. Every year, my students look forward to the part of the computer science unit where they get to use the robots to code. These materials have boosted their interest in learning more about a subject they did not think was accessible to them. Being able to see what computer science can do in real life, with technology that uses this skill is a irreplaceable experience that make my students want to learn more and be better in the subject of computer science.

Funded Mar 11, 2016The implementation of Makey Makey into our computer science curriculum has been very beneficial to our students journey in understanding computer science. Our students are learning to code, which basically means that they are learning to create simple computer programs and create commands that make the computer do a task. The Makey Makey kits add another dimension to this learning. With the kits, students can understand the connection between how computers can work with input devices. Rather than just create a program with code, they now can add controller devices to make the computer work as well as add creativity as to how the user will engage with the controller device. In addition, students gain a deeper understanding of the role of electricity in electronic devices and how electricity works. The Makey Makey kits require conductors to be connected in order to work with the computer. Students are then challenged to find conductors or devise a way to improve their controller so that it becomes a conductor. As you can see, the Makey Makey kits enhances our students learning so that they can make deeper connections and broaden their understanding of computer science.
The most exciting feature of this product to the students was the possibility of choosing unique ways to make their program work. It was rewarding to watch our students get motivated and creative as they worked on their projects. Students were not only engaged, but having the time of their life. This project was more enjoyable with the Makey Makey kits.
