  • Full Tummy Learns Better!

    Funded May 8, 2024

When I first saw, that people had given to my project, I was excited to start offering my students different kinds of snacks. Not only did they have new snacks, but now they had options to choose from offering them more language opportunities. I remember how excited they all were having the new snacks and showing their friends which snack, they choose.

The snacks gave my students and me an opportunity to enjoy something delicious, learn language, and socialize with their peers. Student with hearing loss having a tough time socializing with others. Students with hearing loss can sometimes have a challenging time understanding what is happening around them when there is a background noise present. Providing them with an interesting choice of snacks every time keeps there attention longer. Snack time provides them a safe place to learn about different choices and learn to ignore background noise as much as possible.

One of the many interactions that happened among my students that I would like to share was when one of my students became unset about her option of cookies and rice crispy treat. She looked at me and shook her head no. She then said"/a/ /e/". I looked at my assistant to see if she understood. I asked her again which one do you want? Again she said "/a/ /e/" and added a gesture of squeezing near her face. I then realized she wanted apple sauce. She wanted a go go squeeze apple sauce. With the expression in her face I could see that she had been looking forward to having apple sauce. We thought it was so funny because she had never expressed any displeasure about any thing in class.

This is a small sample of how providing my students with a different snack gave her the opportunity to refuse something and use her language to let us know what she wanted. We were then able to provide her with the appropriate language to let us know that she did not want either.

We appreciate all that you have done to make possible. For this I say THANK YOU!, Full Tummy Learns Better was a big hit with all of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jimenez

I remember how excited they all were having the new snacks and showing their friends which snack, they choose.

Student with hearing loss having a difficult time socializing with others. One of the many interactions that happened among my students that I would like to share was when one of my students became exceptionally excited about her option. Student A chose the fish cracker for her snack and waited for the friend next to her to choose his snack. Excitedly she told him "fish, fish", but he chose the chocolate chip cookies. I could see it in her face that she was disappointed he did not chose the fish crackers, but she continued to encourage her other classmate "look fish, fish". Her other neighbor chose the fish crackers and that made her day. She started telling her friend "look fish, fish". We then provided her with "We have the same fish crackers." She cheered with her friend high fives throughout the day. By the end of the day she would tell her friend "same fish crackers" and high five.

This is a small sample of how providing my students with a different snack gave them an opportunity to interact with each other, provided an opportunity to expand their language, and gave them the opportunity to have full tummies to be able to learn.

We appreciate all that you have done to make possible. For this I say THANK YOU!, Full Tummy Learns Better was a big hit with all of my students.”

  • Early Literacy Jumpstart

    Funded Apr 3, 2023

When I first saw that people had given to my project, I was excited to start making experience books with my students. I remember how excited we all were making the first of many books. The first book we made was a classroom book titled "My Favorite Activity at School" where all of the students were included. It was a bombardment of language; having them think of their favorite area, taking picture about what they were doing, choosing from a group of pictures of themselves, and writing a phrase or sentence about it. Then once the book was ready, each student had the opportunity to share their page of the book with the rest of the class, with support from myself for expanding the language if they needed it. Not only did the students enjoy sharing "My Favorite Activity at School" with their peers, it became the most popular book from our bookshelf. We ended up making multiple copies, one for each student to have and share with their family at home.

This experience let us bond as a class. We were able to know what each student loved to do in the classroom. I loved the way the students engaged with each other and I know I will continue to do this type of experience book at the beginning of every school year to help students know a little more about each other. I am excited to continue using the Canon SELPHY CP1300 to print more pictures and make, many more experience books.

We appreciate all that you have done to make this book and future activities possible. For this I say THANK YOU!, Early Literacy Jumpstart was a big hit with all of my students, not only did it get them interested in literacy, but it also helped improve their language and bond with their peers.”
