We are a Title I school located in Brooklyn. The students come from low socio-economic backgrounds, and approximately 96% of the students are below the poverty rate. The students come largely from a Hispanic or Latino background, totaling about 86%. Furthermore, 29% of the students are dealing with the issue of learning English as a second language. Studies show that experiential learning, learning by doing and hands-on activities is effective in teaching language skills. By embedding language activities in real world experiences, I aim to bolster language acquisition in my English Learners as well as my Students with Disabilities. Further, the school is located in an urban setting. One side of the school is adjacent to an elevated subway, while the other is next to project buildings. We have asphalt for a schoolyard and one tree growing. Students are so far removed from nature, and this project also aims to bring them experiences they would not have otherwise.
