I teach a fun-loving group of first graders in a low socio-economic neighborhood. Majority of my students come from homes where little or no English is spoken in the home. Yet, in spite of all of this, they give 100% each day to become the best readers they can be. Many of my students' parents are unable, not unwilling, but unable, to help them learn sight words or assist them with their reading to help them become a reader. I have many children who are struggling to read at a beginning first grade level. One of my students told me their goal for 2013 was to be able to read a book. A book. Any book. My goal for 2013 is to help this student achieve this goal. As an educator, I can't think of a greater gift that I can give to each of my students than the gift of reading.
