Sparking Joy in Reading!
Funded Oct 23, 2023Thank you so much for your generous donations towards our Scholastic News magazines! The students love them.
Our classroom is full of motivated, curious readers but these magazines really bring it out in them. They enjoy reading them with their partner and are constantly running up to tell me unusual facts they've just discovered. "Ms. Maye! Did you know that scientists uncovered a hidden corridor inside the Great Pyramid of Giza this year?!" And, "Ms. Maye did you know that cooking is another way to do science?!"
It is so exciting to watch their passion for non fiction grow! Thank you for making this possible.”

Funded Sep 14, 2023Wow! Thank you again for donating to Donors Choose & supporting our classroom. The class is eating up non-fiction! It is so exciting to watch. Every Monday we pass out their magazines & they get to choose a partner to work with.
Together, they read the articles and answer the questions on the back. They are working so well as partners and helping each other and teaching each other. They are keeping each other accountable too and reminding their partners to underline where they found the answers.
Thank you for this gift that keeps on giving!”

Nonfiction Magazines to Inspire Young Readers
Funded Sep 2, 2022Thank you so much for generously supporting our classroom!
The kids LOVE the articles in the Scholastic News & Science Spin magazines! Recently they got to learn about all the different winter holidays and how people celebrate them around the world. They especially enjoyed learning about the various treats that went with each celebration.
Us teachers are also LOVING the rigorous nonfiction reading! The articles are fascinating, challenging and require the students to read carefully. The last page has a comprehension check where they have to go back and find the evidence in the articles. It really pushes them to pay attention to details.
Thank you again for your generosity! Happy holidays!”

Inspiring Stories Celebrating Cultural Diversity
Funded Oct 21, 2021Thank you for your generous donation of these gorgeous, diverse books to our classroom! They have enriched all of us with their poignant stories and more accurate reflection of the world around us.
When we read these stories aloud, you can hear a pin drop in class - which is a rare occurrence with these enthusiastic students! As we read, the class identifies what challenges the person faced and what character traits the individual has as a result. Some students have even selected some of the people we learned about in these books for their role model project.
Thank you again for your generosity and support of our classroom.”

Funded Sep 12, 2021Wow! Thank you again for donating to our classroom. The students are loving the Scholastic News and Science Spin magazines! It is rarely quiet in our classroom ... except for when I pass out these magazines. They are so excited to see what the articles are about that they jump right into reading. Well, it is quiet for a little while anyway, until I hear a little whispering to their neighbor, "Hey, check this out. Did you ever hear of a quoll? They live in Australia."
I love watching their excitement as they discover the world around them. Thank you for supporting their love of nonfiction!”

Nonfiction Required for Ravenous Readers!
Funded Aug 28, 2020Thank you so much for generously donating to our project! Our students are really enjoying reading both the Scholastic News & the Science Spin magazines.
With remote teaching, it is part of their asynchronous work to read the magazines. I don't get to hear how quiet the classroom usually is when their noses are buried in the fascinating articles. However, I do get to see the results. Students will make pertinent connections to other lessons citing a particular Scholastic News article they read. They've also shared how they've chosen to write in their journals about new ideas they've discovered from the magazines.
Not only do I get to see results, but the parents do too. Various parents have mentioned to me how much the comprehension check on the back page has improved their child's ability to hunt for the evidence and prove their answer.
Thank you again for your lovely gift!”

Nonfiction Readers Rock!
Funded Aug 29, 2019Thank you so much for your generous donations! When I announce the Scholastic News magazines on Mondays I am greeted with squeals of delight!
This week the magazines highlighted two of their favorite authors - Dav Pilkey (author of Dogman & the Captain Underpants series) and Mo Williams (author of Elephants Can't Dance and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus). They were so excited and delighted to discuss these articles with their reading partners.
Thank you for getting these inspiring, informative, and engaging magazines into the hands of our budding readers and writers. The class LOVES them!!! And I love the quietness - they are so lost in the articles they don't even hear me call their names. It is about the only time it is quiet in here all day :)”

Funded Jan 20, 2018Thank you so much for your generous donation of Scholastic News magazines for our classroom! We love it and so do the students. When I pass them out on Friday mornings I get to hear little voices yelling, "Yay!" And then ...silence which is so rare in a 2nd/3rd grade classroom. Their noses are buried in their magazines! It is so fun hearing their reactions to the stories. A number of them go home and read the Scholastic News online (the subscription came with the magazines) to read even more information about the articles they read. Thank you for inspiring our readers and helping them develop a love of nonfiction reading.”

Rad Readers Need Nonfiction Magazines
Funded Sep 9, 2016Thank you so much for your generous donations! The class is loving the nonfiction magazines. On Monday mornings I'm not greeted with a "Good morning," but rather a, "Is it a Scholastic News day?" They are reading up a storm! It is fantastic. Not only that, but they remember what they read. During our class discussions I'll usually hear, "Oh, that is just like that article we read about Raina and Ruuxa three weeks ago." Probably one of the quietest times in our classroom is just after we've passed out the Scholastic News magazines. Thank you very much for helping our young students fall in love with reading!”

Let's "Travel" and Learn About Different Countries
Funded Aug 30, 2016Dear Donors,
Thank you so much for your generous donations! Our students have loved reading about the different countries around the world. They dove head first into their research and discovered fascinating facts about France, Ireland, Japan, China, Russia, Italy, Vietnam, Argentina, & South Africa to name just a few of the places they studied. Together they decided on the most interesting details that were unique and important to each country and gave our class a glimpse into the culture there. Finally, speaking loudly and clearly and making good eye contact, they presented their findings to the rest of their class. Thank you for helping our students "travel" around the world!”
