Sing and Spell Our High Frequency Words
Funded Sep 22, 2016Students in my class have limited use of technology in their homes. I was trying to find an interactive way to help them learn their High Frequency words. I was trying to hit all the learning modalities. These videos incorporated music and dance as well as a visual representation of those high frequency words. Using the Ipads was a challenge so I went another route by borrowing laptops. They responded well to the videos and actually started singing the songs on their own.
The students were excited to see the words in motion with an added song and hand movements. It's like their words were coming to life. I introduced the H.F. videos to the whole group first and then had them use them on the laptops on their H.F. word day during word study. Having these new videos seemed to recharge their interest in learning their words. We also got replacement stamps for some of the videos that weren't available and the kids got to copy and stamp their words. That was fun for them to do and they got to take their sheets home and read them to their families.
I had one student struggling to learn his first 25 words and seeing them put to music has really helped him. He only needs two more words to pass his list. I think for next year, I'm going to introduce the videos on the first week of school so that the songs become part of weekly routines for learning those words. I have the SEI (Structured English Immersion) class and having something to attach the words to has made a huge impact. Thank you so much for helping to bring this technology to my students!”
