Greening Our Cafeteria
Funded Aug 15, 2010Thank you for the quick response to our donor request and for your generosity. Your care has impacted our students. Students are able to easily recycle their paper waste, especially their bags in the cafeteria because we now have containers large enough to hold materials from each meal. This also makes our custodians' work easier as no longer have to continuously empty a small carton during meals. You have helped enable students to be responsible citizens; and shown them that others consider their efforts of value.
We were also able to place a bin in the teacher resource center, which previously only had a small recycle bin as well. So teachers are excited to be able to recycle ALL their paper goods, which is numerous quite often. And one bin is in the front office.
So your kindness and care has enable the entire school to be greener. Thank you!”

Recycling Our Lunch
Funded Dec 18, 2009Thank you once again for your generosity. Your donation is and will continue to impact our school and students as they learn that they can have a direct impact on reducing waste in our cafeteria. The last couple of images in our portfolio show our environmental club holding a waste audit in our cafeteria. This took place during one breakfast and two lunch periods. We collected wet waste and dry waste. The wet waste was weighed only (for sanitary reasons). The dry waste we sorted into different categories including unopened food such as the cookies and granola bars. We also noticed that 11 pounds of unfinished milk was collected during ONE lunch period. From this audit students choose to begin recycling at least some of the uneaten wet waste into our compost bin. This would be vegetables, fruits and some breads.
We have assembled the compost bin and will begin to use it as soon as weather is a little warmer. We have spoken with the principal and engineer and will choose a lunch period each week to use for adding to our compost bin. The compostable plates you donated will be used during each lunch period to educate students on their ability to buy/use compostable materials. Our environmental club will teach this to their peers; and then add the plates to our compost bin.
Articles on our activities will be written in our school newspaper so that all students are reminded about this work. And so that parents too can learn from our work.
Thank you again. This would be less "real" if students did not have the bin and plates.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Disney's Planet Challenge and one other donor.First Hand Look At Rocks
Funded Oct 13, 2009It is important to my students and myself that you understand how appreciated your generosity has been by us. Personally, as a teacher, having materials available for my students makes my job easier and more fun. I am able to "see" students comprehending concepts of the rock cycle as they study the different rock collections, read the descriptions of how a sedimentary rock becomes over time a metamorphic rock and continues to change. They can see that indeed sand sediments become sandstone because of these materials; it begins to seem real to them. You can see from the images attached that they were actively engaged in using your materials.
As students, the addition of these rock collections makes their science lab time FUN, and also meaningful.
So we all graciously thank you for your kindness to us!”

Time Collection and Analysis
Funded Jan 23, 2009What a wonderful surprise to learn that you have funded this request for timers and balls. Students were very engaged in their learning while comparing properties between the various balls. They enthusiastically took turns as timers, ball droppers and data collectors as they did multiple trials. It was clear that they felt like scientists and also that they were understanding the differences in behaviors between the balls.
Your thoughtfulness helped students understand these concepts deeper than they would have if they just read about it or watched me demonstrate. Their hands on learning also made science more real for them. ”

Let's See Newton's Laws Of Motion
Funded Oct 16, 2008How wonderful to learn that our request for the Newtonian demonstrators has been fulfilled. Thank you very much. This item is the best I've found to allow students to "see" Newton's third law of motion. Currently I have one that allows me to demonstrate, but learning is always limited when students cannot experience the science for themselves. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Mrs. ”

Mystery Powder Lab
Funded Oct 16, 2008Thank you kindly for your generous donation. The materials will allow my 8th graders to investigate chemical and physical properties of matter. This first-hand experience will help them learn the concepts better as they are engaged in science. The laminating materials will allow me to use the same materials for multiple classes over a number of years, making your donation cost efficient as well as providing a real science experience for my students. Thank you!

GIS Technology and Insect Study
Funded Oct 13, 2008What a wonderful surprise to learn this morning that you have so generously funded the GPS equipment. Our students will now be able to act like real scientists as they collect real data about real insects found in the area surrounding our school. This experience will certainly help them see the value in their science learning and help them understand the concepts being taught. Thank you so very, very much!

Tree Diversity In Our Neighborhood
Funded Aug 17, 2008Thank you very much for your donation to our 4th grade science students. Your thoughtfulness allows my students to experience hands-on science, making their learning more fun and therefore more meaningful and sure to deepen their science concept understanding. These materials also allows them to become familiar with the tree diversity in their neighborhood in a safe manner; which they can apply whenever they are outside. The laminating sheets will ensure that many classes over a number of years can enjoy this inquiry experience. Thank you!”

Keeping Our Magnetism
Funded May 18, 2008Thank you so much for your generous donation to our science classroom. Your gift of materials to help students learn about the concept of magnetism and movement of energy is greatly appreciated. I am thrilled to also know that I will be able to reuse the bar magnets we have using the new magnetizer; and we won't have to purchase new bar magnets. The use of all these materials help my students "see" the science that they are trying to understand. And this greatly will help deepen this learning. Thank you again! Pamela ”

Climate Change Does Affect Us!
Funded Mar 3, 2008Thank you very much for your generous donation to our students. Climate change is on the minds of everyone today and important to teach to my students. However their textbooks do not include information relevant to today's issue on global warming and environmental issues. These two sets of books are current and will help students learn about today's issues and solutions underway to positively affect their lives. It will help them become aware of how to act as responsible citizens in their communities. -Mrs. ”
