  • We've Got Character!

    Funded Nov 13, 2015

I simply want to thank you for your generous donation to my project, "We've Got Character". My students were excited when this box of books arrived and they remain excited each time we read one of the books that was donated by you. It is so wonderful to see joy in their faces as they listen to all of these wonderful stories!

The books that were donated, are for the most part, character related. These books have helped my students to become better friends and learn that kindness is rooted from within. After reading a number of these stories with my first graders, I have witnessed them taking on the language of the texts, and practicing what they've learned. It is my goal to help my first graders build their abilities to empathize with others instead of judging and being cruel. In my classroom, we celebrate differences...because aren't we all unique?

The most beautiful part, of having these books to share with my students, is that the students who once seemed "rough around the edges" are the ones who seem to get the most from these stories. As a teacher, who is also a licensed social worker, I can not thank you enough for the gift you've given my students with your donation. Your kindness does not go unnoticed.”

  • First Graders Want to Boogie!

    Funded Aug 4, 2015

I want to thank you for your kind donation to this project, "First Graders Want to Boogie!". Your generosity has helped my students to begin first grade with enthusiasm and interest. We have begun to use the Boogie Boards for doing word work and writing during guided reading time.

My students find the Boogie Boards exciting to use and I am able to engage them for longer periods of time because of this. They are eager to write now and take on the challenge because of this innovative product. I have one student, for instance, who has turned in nothing but messy work since the start of the school year; however, when using the Boogie Boards, he writing is neater and more legible than most of the other students. He requests to use it whenever he is writing now!

I am grateful for your interest in my classroom and helping to provide resources that excite and ignite my students with a passion for learning.”

  • Creating A Cozy Classroom!

    Funded Dec 23, 2014

Thank you so much for your generous donations towards my proposal, "Creating a Cozy Classroom"! I can't begin to tell you how this donation has changed my class in only a month. My first graders are struggling learners. They have difficulty learning to read and some of them won't even attempt to learn because of how challenging it is. However, incorporating the seat cushions into our reading time has already had a tremendous impact on my little learners!

My first graders want to use the bean bag chairs and cushions whenever they have a free minute! It's so incredible what this donation has done to motivate my students. I can not thank you enough! My students now ask if they can read their books...just to grab a cushion and find a quiet spot to curl up!

I appreciate your generosity more than you can imagine! You've certainly impacted the lives of 18 young learners in a tremendous way, and for that, I am grateful beyond words!”

    With gratitude,

  • Leaping into Literacy!

    Funded Aug 28, 2014

I write this letter with indescribable gratitude. We have had our iPad for a few months now and they have impacted my students' learning incredibly. Let me describe my students. They were hand-selected for my class because they are the lowest tier of first graders in my building. Most did not know their letters or letter sounds in September. Some could not even write their first names...imagine that! They were way behind their first grade counterparts. Everything was a struggle!

Fast forward to the 63rd day of school and they have already grown by leaps and bounds! They are all beginning to read and, more than that, they WANT to read! The iPads have been a lifesaver! I have never seen little ones so excited as when they have the opportunity to use the iPad! With every new app that I purchase, the excitement grows! It has been one of the "best school years" according to my students...and I must agree.

I cannot thank you enough for your generosity. While I don't know you personally, I do know that you have touched the lives of eighteen six year olds and their very appreciative teacher. I also know that you have given the gift of learning to my students and your donation has helped me to lessen the learning gap that was between my students and their counterparts. In a world where people seem more and more wrapped up in themselves, you have reached out and made a difference. For that, I am grateful beyond words.”

  • Read and Succeed!

    Funded Dec 9, 2012

I would like to thank each of you for your generous donation which helped to fund my proposal, "Read and Succeed". We have only enjoyed the books for a couple of weeks, but my students are already enthralled by them!

The variety of fiction and non-fiction texts have given my students a plethora of books from which to choose. It has been exciting to watch them peruse the books and select books to read. Because their lives outside of school are so limited, discovering these books has been like discovering treasures! I have such a difficult time getting them out of the classroom library!

I can not thank you enough! I thought that my library was sufficient until the package came from Donors Choose. I now see how limited my library was and just how much excitement has been generated with the new additions.

For your generosity, I thank you.”

    With gratitude,

  • It's a Wide, Wide World!

    Funded Oct 25, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous donations which allowed for the purchase of several social studies type books as well as for a monthly classroom subscription to Time for Kids. My students and I have enjoyed the addition of these materials to our classroom and have learned a lot while utilizing them.

Each time we read a new book from the collection or learn about what's going on in our world through Time for Kids, I realize how fortunate we were to receive your donations. The subscriptions for Time for Kids have allowed my limited language learners to experience geographical locations and holidays which they might otherwise have not experienced. These materials have provided marvelous opportunities for discussion and have helped to increase their vocabulary as well as to build their background knowledge.

They love being the only first graders in our school to have received special gifts and take pride in using these materials. With the help of the map books, my first graders are now able to identify not only the city in which we live, but also our state, country, and continent. Photos and letters are a wonderful way to express our gratitude, but they do not do justice in demonstrating just how valuable our learning experiences have been.

My students and I are appreciative to you and thank you for your generous donations.”

    With gratitude,

  • Bugging Out!

    Funded Oct 31, 2008

Thank you so much for funding our proposal. Something wonderful happens when young children are able to explore little creatures close-up! They learn to take care of them and appreciate them. I believe that this helps them on the path to becoming compassionate adults.

Your generous support, in such a financially difficult time, is greatly appreciated. Many thanks”

  • We're All "Write!"

    Funded Oct 10, 2008

Thank you so much for helping to fund this proposal. In such economically challenging times, your generosity means more than you can imagine!

My children have settled into first grade and are beginning to use classroom centers. Our writing centers are very important because they encourage the students to take risks and begin to write. When I told them that our proposal had been funded, they were excited and, every day since, have asked when "the stuff" will get here.

    With great appreciation,

    Gin”

  • What In The World?!?

    Funded Dec 25, 2008

Thank you so much for funding my proposal, "What in the World!?". My first grade children love to learn new and challenging things and feel "grown up" when they learn about other cultures as well as what's going on in our world.

I can not wait to tell them that they will be getting Time for Kids. I am sure they will gain so much from the stories and pictures within the periodical.

Thank you for making this learning experience possible for them”

  • How Does Your Garden Grow?

    Funded May 20, 2008

I would like to thank you for funding my proposal. Being able to teach young children, through the real-life experiences of planting and growing seeds, is very meaningful for me. With your generous donation, my children will gain experiences that they would, otherwise, not have.

As we delve into this project, I will look forward to sharing photographs and writings with you. Again, thank you for making such experiential learning possible!

    Sincerely,

    Gina ”

Many of us take writing for granted. As young children, we watched family members as they wrote and we were curious! Unfortunately, the children in my first grade class are not that fortunate. Many of the inner-city children in my classroom receive free or reduced lunch. They come from disadvantaged homes and often struggle in first grade because writing is so difficult for them.
