Scholastic News Comes to the South Bronx!
Funded Oct 14, 2015We are so happy with our Scholastic News! We are using Scholastic News as an informational resource to spark classroom discussion about real world issues. We also use Scholastic News for small group instruction. Scholastic news provides practice at identifying various text features, and how text features contribute to their understanding. We had such a wonderful class discussion about 3-D printing and how it was going to revolutionize the world. After reading the article, my 3rd grade class led their own discussion about how it was going to change the world not only in science, but in medicine and space. They all shared opinions and agreed with each other and even agreed to disagree! It was so wonderful to see them discussing topics in an educated way. I love that Scholastic news gives them real world news on a level they can understand.
When we got our first package of Scholastic News, it did not stay in the protective plastic very long! They insisted I open it right away and read the first one that day! I was so happy to hear that they were so excited, I rearranged my schedule so that could be fit in immediately. I was happy to see their reaction. Every week they take turns checking my mailbox to see if the new issue has been delivered. They are very grateful for this opportunity and have loved every article they have read since the first issue has arrived!
My next step for this project will be use the article to further research on an article they found the most interesting so far. I will have them choose from 5 different articles and group them by article. They will as a group give us more information about the topic they want to learn more about. This will build their team working skills as well as their research skills.
Thank you once again from the bottom of my heart, for this wonderful opportunity and for funding my project. My students have truly benefited from your generous contribution.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Mercado
