The students in my classroom are learning to advocate for themselves. One way I encourage this responsibility is by providing alternative seating options so they can decide for themselves to use it if they feel it will help them learn more successfully. This project includes wobble chairs, wobble cushions, bouncy bands for desks and for chairs, lap desks, and balance balls, in order that kids are given the option of choosing one of these alternative seating options for the purpose of being able to move, wiggle, or bounce while they work in class. Those that opt to use the alternative seating are making the choice to remain engaged and productive in their learning. The kids enjoy choosing the various seating options for both independent and small group learning. Research shows that students need to engage their bodies in order to engage their minds. For some students, traditional seating works well and is appropriate for them while they work and focus on instruction. A great number of students, however, need to wiggle, bounce, fidget, or in some way move in order to increase their ability to concentrate. This project will increase the alternative seating options in our classroom and support successful learning in the process.
