  • The Colonel Kernel's Needs....

    Funded Dec 22, 2010

Thank you so much for donating the skeleton of the snake and the snake books to our classroom.  The students loved reading about the snake scientist, Dr. Bob, in one of the books.  We've learned lots of interesting snake facts and the students are particularly fascinated that snakes use pheromones to navigate.  They are developing a new level of appreciation for our amazing class pet!

The model of the snake vertebrae is also an amazing learning tool.  The students are better able to understand the amazing anatomy of snakes.  We've recently written a non-fiction book on snakes and the snake skeleton helped students draw anatomically correct diagrams of the snake's body.

We are very grateful for your donations!  They have been an invaluable part of our Non-Fiction Unit! ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. W.

  • From Bed-Stuy to Broadway!

    Funded Mar 31, 2009

I am so grateful for your donations that made this project possible. May 27, 2009 was truly an amazing night for all the students! When I announced that we were going to the Lion King on Broadway my students had many questions. Even though we had just finished a unit on fairy tales and acted many of them out, the students were still unsure of what a Broadway play would entail. We learned about set design, costumes and choreography. We also practiced our manners by not talking or fidgeting while watching the movie version of Lion King. By the time the night arrived the students were so excited to see the event. However, I hadn't prepared them for the beauty of the Minksoff Theater—there were loud exclamations as we entered the door.

The show started right as we settled into our seats and I was able to see all the students' faces change in wonder. During the opening number of the Lion King, the performers came into the audience dressed as beautiful African animals and my students were completely in awe. One boy turned to me and said "This is so cool! This is really real! It's just like my video game!" For the rest of the show they were enraptured—following the performers every move. By intermission, many of the students told me they now wanted to be Broadway performers when they grew up.

On the subway ride home, the students traded their favorite parts and asked many questions about the mechanics of the set and the costumes. They were still so excited the next day and many stated that they didn't know it was going to be "that cool!"

Your donations went to very worthy students. I teach a Gifted and Talented class in an under-served urban area. These students work very hard everyday and our so eager to experience new learning opportunities. It is hard to express how much your gift means to us, but I want you to know that you have made a big impact. I believe that you have changed my students' lives my showing them the power of the performing arts. It was a joy to see them experience . ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. W.

  • Gifted Readers Need Comfy Places To Read

    Funded Dec 8, 2008

I cannot wait to see my students' faces when they see the bean bag chairs! This is such a great reward for all of their hard work in the classroom. These chairs are perfect for the gifted students who need a little private space to engage themselves in their reading. They will benefit from the concentration these bean bags allow.

Again, thank you for your generous gift!

    Best,

    Kyr”

  • Give the Gift of Music

    Funded Feb 3, 2009

I cannot thank you enough for your gift of the I-Pod Stereo. We use it everyday and it really helps set the tone of my classroom. It is so important that the class is a relaxing place to work and music is a key part. I play soothing music during independent work and yoga. It's amazing to see some students, who have never have been able to complete their independent work, really started to focus with the help of the music. For a little bit of fun, we also listen to music on some Friday afternoons--this is quite a popular reward for my students!+

+My school currently is facing a budget crisis and none of this would have been possible without your help. Again, thank you so much!+

  • Na Mat Ste!

    Funded Apr 9, 2008

We are so excited to have Yoga mats for our weekly Yoga class!!! We have been practicing Yoga for a few weeks now and we will be really excited to have mats so we don't slip or accidentally kick each other.

With these Yoga mats we can now practice some more advanced moves like "assisted headstands" with our teacher.

I wish I had video of the screams and the celebration dances that happened in the room when I made the announcement that this project had been funded. One of my students put it best when he said "This is so awesome, so awesome, so awesome...!!"

I am so grateful for your donation.

    Sincerely,

    Kyra ”

I teach second grade in an low income, struggling urban community in New York. I am lucky enough to teach a group of 12 Gifted and Talented students for the second year (I was also their first grade teacher.) Last week, I was excited to begin teaching challenging lessons immediately because the students are already familiar with the classroom systems. However, after only the first week of school I am encountering serious problems in our new room that have affected student learning.
