I teach Pearl from The Scarlet Letter, Melinda from Speak, Janie from There Eyes Were Watching God, and then there's me, the nurse from Romeo and Juliet. Needless to say, my 150 characters and I would provide endless stories of obstacles and victories. My students are truly amazing. They are able to withstand poverty and, sadly, even rape and still manage to appreciate their opportunity to receive a quality education. Although I am only in my early twenties, I proudly call each of my students MY children. They are the most exciting group of kids a person could ever meet. I know that "Alice" is going to have some exciting new way to analyze Miss Moore from "The Lesson." I know that "Charlie" is going to relate the events of The Scarlet Letter in some way that I bet even college professors have never considered. My children have been cheated out of so much due to uncontrollable factors, such as their socioeconomic status, but I hope that their right to read will not be jeopardized.
