  • Learning Tools to Remove Barriers

    Funded Oct 26, 2022

I am so ecstatic! Thank you all so very much! I can not wait to have my students complete engaging projects with easel paper and post-its. I am most excited about the sharpener. Mine broke last year and I did not have the extra money to replace it with a nice on. I bought a little one. With over 100 students per day, the little one is on its last legs. So excited about the new sharpener.

Bless you, for helping my classes.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Murphy

  • Diversifying Free Reading

    Funded Apr 7, 2022

The books you helped buy for my classroom were hardly out of the box before the students snatched them up and settled in to read. Several of the books were graphic novels which have been amazingly motivating for students that lack the motivation to read.

At the start of this school year, I did a book tasting. This was a fun way to expose students to these new novels. Students were given a "tasting menu" that asked about their first impression of the book. We then read the first three pages and they had to say one good thing about the book. Then they rated it according to the likelihood that they would read the book. This was when I had to start a sign-up list for several of the novels. They were so excited to read them.

In my class, students read for part of the class time and my High Honors students read at home and respond to questions. These books have sparked a new excitement for reading. Thank you again for all of your help in securing these diverse books for my diverse group of students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Murphy

  • Motivating Readers

    Funded Jun 11, 2012

Let me begin by saying thank you, thank you, and thank you. My students were so excited about the package arriving, in the mail. They begged to be the first to use the new Nook Color. Your generous gift makes three Nooks that I have for the students to use. They love them.

One student said to me, "Wow, I don't think I have ever read 100 pages." The excitement in using the Nook Color is amazing. Another student who told me she didn't like reading has begged me to read for the whole class period. It makes me smile to see how students can change their attitude about reading when you incorporate technology into the mix.

The thing that the students enjoy the most is the ability to look up a word with just a tap. The students hate having to go get a dictionary to look up a word and often times will just skip the word and they lose the meaning of the story or passage. Having the ability to just touch the word and get the meaning of the word alleviates that frustration for the students. Thank you for helping my students improve their comprehension.

Lastly, I have also instituted a reward system for respectful, hardworking students. Each day, I give away "Respect" tickets to deserving students. Then at the end of the month I pick three per class to win 20 minutes of game play on the Nooks. Shhhhh, don't tell my students that all the games are educational. I have Scrabble, Boggle, Chess and a few others for them to play. They think that they are just getting out of work and they love being rewarded for their hard work and for being respectful.

Having the New Nook Color has changed reading for a few of my students. The great thing is that your gift is a gift that will keep on giving, year after year. Each year new students will experience reading in a new fresh way. Hopefully this will help develop a love for reading that will last them their whole lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Murphy

This year I have 26 8th graders for reading. They are great middle school students, from Brockton, MA with friendly personalities. The problem is that some of them are a little unmotivated to read. They don't like it because they struggle with it. The task of motivating these adolescents is a difficult one. So, I am searching for unique ways to motivate them.
