  • Service Learning in the Dominican Republic

    Funded Dec 3, 2019

We are just 50 days away until we are in the Dominican Republic! We are currently planning our work to do in schools. Students are designing mural ideas, planning creative writing lessons and designing lesson plans to teach students English. My High School students are attending weekly workshops to research the history, economy and education system of the Dominican Republic and are excited to work to better the community of Sosua. On our 7-day journey, we will be able to visit a University, a High School and paint murals at an Elementary School. Thank you for providing this life-changing experience for my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pawson

  • Ready, Set, Travel!

    Funded Nov 22, 2019

It is with the deepest appreciation that I write this letter. My students are so incredibly excited to begin the work of traveling to the Dominican Republic on this service-learning trip. We have begun our weekly workshops exploring the culture, government, history and education system of the Dominican Republic. Students will begin planning activities for the classroom and the design work for creating murals for the community of Cabarete.

For many students, they are getting their passports for the very first time! Do you remember your first time traveling to another country? Or the moment of taking off the first time you got on a plane? The excitement the students feel is life-changing, and that is all because of you.

Thank you for providing this once in a lifetime experience for my students. You are helping us change the world!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pawson

  • Ready, Set, Take Off!

    Funded Feb 7, 2019

Thank you so much for your generosity in supporting this project. Students are incredibly excited to finish fundraising during these last 2 months before our trip to the Dominican Republic. Students will begin seminar classes to study the history, society, and education system of Cabarete, Dominican Republic. We travel in May to embark on our service learning project through literacy and visual arts. Students will be provided journals this month to begin documenting their thoughts regarding the project. We look forward to the lasting impact this experience will make on everyone. Thanks to you for making it possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pawson

  • Service Learning in the Dominican Republic!

    Funded Jan 21, 2019

Thank you so much for donating to our service trip to the Dominican Republic! This week we were able to reserve our seats with JetBlue and pay for lodging and accommodations in Cabarete. Students are actively fundraising and tomorrow we have our first parent night to begin planning for our trip. We still have $17,000 to go, but I am confident that the school community will come together to make this trip happen! Our itinerary has been created- including opportunities to teach language to students in an elementary school and paint a community mural. We are just a few months away. It is because of you that some students will get on a plane for the very first time, see the Dominican Republic for the first time and participate in a service learning trip for the first time. We couldn't have done it without you- thank you for your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pawson

  • Student Voice through Student Government

    Funded Nov 26, 2018

Thank you so so so much for your generosity! Yesterday, I traveled with 20 students to a local Family Center facility in Queens, New York. Every student and staff member proudly wore their MCHS House Representative shirt that was made possible because of you! We wrapped a total of 456 toys that our school community donated and collected to give to children who are currently in the foster care system. We attended the holiday party and students felt professional as they proudly wore their student leader t-shirts. Thank you for thinking of us this holiday students and making it all possible!”

  • Sculpture Molds For Teens!

    Funded Oct 1, 2017

Thank you so much for your generosity. Packages came in last week and students were so excited to create their cray pas art pieces and sculpture molds! This year, I am teaching 3 different classes: Art History, Portfolio Development and Introduction to Sculpture. All of my students will benefit in different and unique ways from the materials you have provided us with! Students will study art movements like cubism and impressionism and be able to use materials to create still life drawings, masks and relief sculptures. Thank you so much for providing us with such wonderful materials!”

  • Team Building Through Art Making!

    Funded Jun 9, 2017

Thank you so much for your generous donations! Students have completed their fourth day of school and were incredibly excited to learn that they will be exploring brand new materials this year. In my sculpture class, students are studying functional artwork and will use the new baskets to practice their weaving skills. Coinciding with the High School history curriculum, students will be exposed to ancient cultures of Africa and Asia. Students in my portfolio development class are exploring fibers and new materials and will use the awesome fabric dye kits to create shirts and bags. We appreciate you for making the start to this school year so exciting!”

  • Prints for Social Justice!

    Funded Jan 12, 2017

Thank you so very much for donating these awesome supplies to my students. With our new carving tools, linoleum blocks, wood blocks and specialized paper- my students are ready to make their new prints! My students have been reading and writing about the current political landscape and are excited to make some prints inspired by current events. Looking to Shepard Fairey for inspiration, my students will make thought-provoking and reflective art. Their prints will be shared with the school community during our Spring Showcase next month. Thank you for believing in us and the power of art!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pawson

  • Paint Your Inspiration!

    Funded Dec 7, 2016

On Friday the package arrived full of acrylic paint and canvases. My students were so excited! They have completed their research assignments, writing 2-page papers about a famous painting of their choice. Students studied and presented on Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, Edvard Munch, and Diego Rivera. After presenting their work they began to create mini sketches of these famous paintings. Now that our supplies have arrived, students will begin to design their very own masterpieces! Students are creating sketches and beginning to transfer them to their very own canvases. Thank you so much for providing an opportunity for my students to feel like the professional artists they are studying. It is rare that students in a public school in Brooklyn are given such special supplies.”

    With gratitude,

  • A Trip to Disneyworld!

    Funded Mar 25, 2015

Thank you all so very much for your generosity! Students are getting ready to embark on their trip to Orlando, Florida! With less than a month until the trip, students are filled with energy and enthusiasm. We held our final meeting last week to give out itineraries, check lists for backing, and final notifications for the trip. We are able to take 32 students on this trip, many leaving their neighborhoods for the very first time! Thank you so much for rewarding these deserving students and providing opportunity of a lifetime!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pawson

The majority of my students are English Language Learners and Special Needs students. They are struggling financially and come from neighborhoods full of crime and gang activity. They are high school students and they are preparing themselves to enter the world as young adults. Our school is a safe zone, full of caring individuals who treat our student body as family. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, our ability to purchase materials has been cut tremendously. Many of my students would like to pursue higher education or obtain a career in a field relating to the arts. These materials would allow the students to improve their art-making techniques while expanding their portfolios.
