My students are just beginning their school careers. They are only 5 years old but many of them had never been in an educational setting until this year. Their school is in a culturally diverse area in Missouri with limited resources for specific items to supplement the current regular curriculum materials. They are energetic, curious and eager to learn. They are children that love books and words and writing stories. Currently, we are working on print concepts and writing sentences. This has proved to be the most difficult area of growth for them. Many of them do not have books or writing materials at home and only have these experiences in school. Many of their parents work and have little time for meaningful reading experiences so it is left to the school to provide them. They love using dry erase boards and markers in reading and writing, especially during centers, but we have to borrow them from other classes and cannot get enough for everyone to participate at the same time.
