My Babies Want to Read Books with Characters Like Them!
Funded Aug 25, 2016Dear Paul,
Thank you so much for your generous donation to my school, my classroom, and my babies. We deeply appreciate your consistent support and are incredibly indebted to you. My young people, as you know, are curious & passionate students who interested in making the world a more equitable place. To begin their first steps in change-making, it is imperative that they are able to see the world as it is. These texts will give them some language and tools to use when operating in a system that has historically disenfranchised them. We are so grateful for you.”

Funded Aug 25, 2016Dear Paul,
Thank you so much for your unchanging commitment to my classroom and my young people. Because of you, my students were able to enter the classroom on Day One with all of the materials that they need in order to deeply engage with rigorous texts, have high-level conversations with one another on class content, and explore difficult and controversial topics. These materials have been incredibly valuable to the progress and growth of all of my babies. While highlighters, pens, sticky notes, and index cards may seem minimal donations, to us, it means the world. Thank you so much!”

Thank you so much for your generous gift to our seniors in the Class of 2016 #powerofthebean. Because of you, our almost college students will have a beautiful memento to take with them from their senior prom that will last a lifetime. Memories like the senior prom are amongst some of the most precious for high school seniors. This photo booth will elevate both the class and luxury of their senior prom.
We are incredibly thankful for your dedication to leveling the playing field for all schools. Thank you for all that you do for public education.”

Life-changing Books to Expand Our Culturally Relevant World
Funded Mar 13, 2016To Whom It May Concern:
Thank you so much for your generous gift to my classroom and my students. Each of the books that you have donated to my students has deeply connected to each of their lives in a variety of different ways. My young people were beyond joyous to receive these brand new books and spent their spring break reading one of the selected titles in preparation for their final research paper. Whether they read "A Lesson Before Dying" or the "The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace: A Brilliant Young Man Who Left Newark for the Ivy League, my students were deeply invested in the themes of adolescence, race, social justice, and grit that appear in each of these texts.
We thank you for your gift and your commitment to public education.”

Powerful Books for Powerful Kids
Funded Dec 31, 2015Thank you so much for your continued support to my seniors and my classroom. Your generous donation to my students has added significant diversity to the literature that we read. Because of you, my students will have the opportunity to engage with the powerful voices of James Baldwin, Jose Saramago, David Sedaris, David Foster Wallace, and Jeffrey Eugenides. Not only will this diversify our conversations on literature, these novels will add complexity to my students' senior year of English. We appreciate this gift of words and worlds (because you get both within the confines of a book).”

Ties For Brotherhood
Funded Jan 16, 2016Thank you again for your generous donation to our boys in Umoja. When our new boys and new staff members received their Umoja ties, they were beyond elated. Staff members, particularly, were surprised to be included. With twenty young men now involved in the program and nearly ten male staff members, the Umoja tie is both a powerful presence in the school and a visible reminder of the boys' brotherhood. As a result, the boys are even more united.
Your gift to our boys continues to impact them in positive ways. Thank you so, so much for playing such a huge role in their lives.”

Scarves for Girl Power!
Funded Jan 29, 2016Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom and my girls. Your gift to my fierce young ladies allows my girls to have a visible symbol of their commitment to one another (and the rest of the school) as empowered sisters. It also serves as a symbol of their hard work and dedication over the summer and throughout the school year. My girls said it best when they said "I do have a voice; I am stronger. I am never alone because my sisters will be by my side every single day. Together, we are powerful; we are phenomenal. We. Are. Nia."”

Ms. Chung
