My students are beautifully diverse. They attend a huge public high school in California where there tend to be two groups of kids: those who succeed and plan to go on to college, and those who slip through the cracks. Our school is focusing on literacy development to ensure all students are able to read at (and beyond) grade level, so we read many non-fiction texts in the English classroom, in addition to literature. The majority of my students are bilingual, and many are English Language Learners. These students are trying to learn the English language and the content at the same time, and they face many challenges along the way.
