My 5th grade students attend a California elementary school. Most are Spanish-speaking English learners. Many of them are economically challenged and lack the home support to close the achievement gap. It is imperative that teachers do everything possible to engage them in their learning. Despite the disadvantages, my students come to school every day with good attitudes, and they are eager to learn. They put forth a tremendous effort and do so with smiles on their faces. They are curious about the world and often ask life questions that relate to the topic that is being covered. It's my job to ensure that their motivation does not go unmatched.
