My students are in 5th through 12th grade and come from a small town in Michigan. The town has a lot of low income families. A lot of parents used to work in Indiana in the R.V. industry, but when the economy went bad, so did their jobs. It is a very diverse community because it was a large hub for the underground railroad. The students are all very accepting of each other and really work well together. There is community pride for their diversity as well. My students really try hard, but because of some of the home/job situations, they fall behind. About half of my band students play on school instruments because they can't afford to rent or buy their own. Some of the students can't even afford a reed for their instrument. For them it's a choice between money for food or a reed for their instrument. They are amazing kids that really deserve a chance to thrive.
