My students are sophomores in a public, suburban high school in NC. The area has a diverse population ranging from native born Americans to immigrants who have arrived in the United States recently. Regardless of their backgrounds, most teens have one thing in common today- they do not read for pleasure. Cell phones, Youtube videos, video games, and other screens have replaced books. Research repeatedly says that to engage students, we need to give them books to read with characters with which they can connect. Young Adult texts provide one means of supporting their needs while still satisfying the academic requirements.
