Our school is a new school, created in 2008 through an Ohio initiative to increase the amount of students who may pursue careers in the STEM fields. Our school is one of nine schools generated from that initiative but, unlike the other eight schools, ours is regional, attracting students, of all academic levels, from five different counties and over 20 different school districts. We function much like a vocational school in that students are able to take part in extra-curricular activities at their home districts. As the picture in my profile indicates, we are very project-based, with student projects transcending traditional curricular subject areas. For example, the 9th grade engages in a project involving water-propelled rockets. In their science and math classes, they learn about the physics of flight; in their English and social studies classes, they create a business plan to market and sell their rockets; in art class they work on their rockets' designs.
